Heavy Equipment Mechanic, Diesel Mechanic
THE POSITION
The Diesel and Construction Equipment Mechanic role with the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) offers a chance to keep essential equipment running safely and smoothly. This position allows you to build strong mechanical skills while supporting crews that maintain our essential fleet in Clearfield County. DESCRIPTION OF WORKThis position performs maintenance, inspections, diagnostics, and repairs on diesel and construction equipment to ensure safe and effective operation. Through your work, you will support safe operations by performing inspections, completing repairs, and following required procedures.
- Vehicle Repair:
Repair and overhaul cars, trucks, tractors, and construction equipment including engines, transmissions, and electrical components - Preventive Maintenance:
Carry out diagnostics, tune-ups, tire changes, system repairs, and routine servicing on vehicles and equipment - Safety Inspection:
Perform official state safety and emissions inspections and complete all required documentation - Equipment Servicing:
Maintain and repair motorized hand tools such as chain saws, compressors, tampers, mowers, and trimmers - Field Adjustments:
Make necessary adjustments and minor repairs in the field to ensure safe operation and reduce wear - Workplace Safety:
Follow safety procedures, report hazards, document injuries or damage, and maintain a clean, safe work environment
- Full-time employment
- Work hours are 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.
- Work hours are subject to change based on seasonal requirements and operational needs.

You will not have the option to telework in this position . - Salary:
Selected candidates who are new to employment with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania will begin employment at the starting annual salary of $56,607.00 (before taxes). - You will receive further communication regarding this position via email. REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY
Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:
- Successful completion of the commonwealth’s Diesel and Construction Equipment Mechanic Trainee program ; or
- Two years of journey level mechanic experience in the diagnosis and repair of automobiles, heavy trucks, or construction equipment, which includes one year of experience in the diagnosis and repair of diesel vehicles or equipment ; or
- An equivalent combination of experience and training .
- This position requires possession of an active Pennsylvania Class A or B Commercial Driver's License with the Air Brake Restriction (L) removed.
- This position requires an active Pennsylvania Class 1, Class 4, or Class 7 Inspection Mechanic Certification on the first day of employment.
- This position requires possession of an active Medical Examiner’s Certificate in accordance with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Regulations on the first day of employment.
- This position requires employees to pass the Department of Transportation’s New Mechanic Training course during the probationary period.
- Employees may be required to obtain and maintain CDL endorsements and certifications necessary to operate specific pieces of equipment.
- This position is subject to Drug and Alcohol testing in accordance with Federal Regulations.
- You must be able to perform essential job functions.
