INSTRUCTIONAL ASSISTANT I

BASIC FUNCTION

Assist a certificated teacher in providing instructional support to individual students or small groups and monitor student progress.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

Instructional Assistant I supports teachers in a classroom by performing a variety of instructional and supervisory duties under the direction of certificated staff.

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES Classroom Instructional Support
  • Assist teachers by tutoring individual students or small groups and reinforcing instructional concepts as directed.
  • Assist in preparing instructional materials, lessons, and classroom activities.
  • Administer and score tests and assist with diagnostic assessments according to established procedures.
  • Monitor and report student academic progress and behavior to the teacher.
  • Assist students with classroom assignments, lab work, and learning activities.
  • Provide examples, guidance, and emotional support to students.
  • Participate as a member of instructional or remediation teams as assigned.
  • Confer with teachers regarding instructional strategies and student needs.
Classroom Operations & Clerical Support
  • Perform routine clerical duties including preparing classroom materials, operating copy machines, and maintaining student records and attendance.
  • Assist with classroom organization including setting up work areas, displays, and instructional equipment.
  • Operate audio-visual and instructional equipment as needed.
  • Maintain inventory of classroom supplies and materials.
  • Assist in supervising students during classroom, laboratory, and other instructional activities.
Student Supervision & School Support
  • Monitor students during lunch, recess, assemblies, field trips, and other school activities as assigned.
  • Assist with emergency drills and safety procedures.
  • Support the health and safety of students by following established procedures and regulations.
  • Maintain communication with teachers, administrators, and parents regarding student behavior, health concerns, or academic progress.
  • Participate in staff meetings and in-service training programs.
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of:

  • Basic academic subjects taught in District schools including reading, language, grammar, and mathematics
  • Safe practices in classrooms, playgrounds, and school bus transportation
  • Correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation, and vocabulary
  • Needs and challenges of students with disabilities or special needs
  • Basic record-keeping procedures
  • Applicable Kentucky Administrative Regulations and relevant laws
  • Interpersonal communication skills using tact, patience, and courtesy

Ability to:

  • Learn and apply child guidance and student support techniques
  • Communicate effectively with students, parents, staff, and community members
  • Perform routine clerical and classroom support tasks
  • Operate instructional and office equipment
  • Maintain accurate records
  • Follow oral and written instructions
  • Work cooperatively with teachers and staff
  • Monitor and report student behavior according to District procedures
  • Apply school policies and procedures related to student supervision
  • Observe health and safety regulations

    Maintain current knowledge of emergency evacuation procedures
  • Safely lift and assist students according to established guidelines
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
  • High school diploma or GED
  • If assigned to a Title I funded school, one of the following is required:
    • Associate degree
    • 48 college credit hours
    • Passing score on the Kentucky Para educator Assessment (KPA)
  • Some experience working with children in an organized setting
