Laundry Attendant

Operate or tend washing machines and dryers to wash or dry hotel bedspreads, blankets, draperies, linens, towels, and washcloths.

Load articles into washers or dryers.

Start washers and dryers, and turn valves or levers to regulate machine processes and the volume of soap, detergent, water, bleach, starch, and other additives.

Remove items from washers or dryers.

Sort and count articles removed from dryers, and fold, wrap, or hang them.

Clean machine filters.

Examine and sort into lots articles to be cleaned, according to color, fabric, dirt content, and cleaning technique required.

Apply bleaching powders to spots and spray them with steam to remove stains from fabrics that do not respond to other cleaning solvents.

Determine spotting procedures and proper solvents, based on fabric and stain types.

Spray steam, water, or air over spots to flush out chemicals, dry material, raise naps, or brighten colors.

Pre-soak, sterilize, scrub, spot-clean, and dry contaminated or stained articles, using neutralizer solutions and portable machines.

Mix bleaching agents with hot water in vats, and soak material until it is bleached.

Apply chemicals to neutralize the effects of solvents.

Mix and add detergents, dyes, bleaches, starches, and other solutions and chemicals to clean, color, dry, or stiffen articles.

Sprinkle chemical solvents over stains, and pat areas with brushes or sponges to remove stains.

Inspect soiled articles to determine sources of stains, to locate color imperfections, and to identify items requiring special treatment.

Iron or press articles using hand irons or pressing machines.

Hang curtains, drapes, blankets, and linens on stretch frames to dry.

High school diploma preferred.

Ability to work in a fast paced environment.

Ability to give full attention to what other people are saying, taking time to understand the points being made, asking questions as appropriate, and not interrupting at inappropriate times.

Ability to convey information effectively.

This position requires walking primarily on a hard, level surface throughout the workday. The employee is frequently required to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. Reaching above shoulder heights, below the waist or lifting as required. Occasionally lifts up to 50 pounds.

This job operates in a hotel environment. This role frequently comes in contact with cleaning chemicals.

The noise level is moderate in the laundry area. There could be frequent interruptions from housekeepers and staff members.

There are a number of daily deadlines associated with this position, which may cause stress to some individuals. The position must also deal with a wide variety of people and may encounter conflict.

Regularly scheduled up to 40 hours per week, but overtime and weekend hours could be required at times.
