Federal Work Study – Chemistry Lab Assistant

Must be a Bay College student enrolled in the work study program and maintain satisfactory academic progress.

The purpose of the Federal Work-Study Program is to give a student an opportunity to develop skills, gain on-the-job experience for future employment, and allow flexibility to work around class schedules.

• Bay College student in the work study program.
• Degree‑seeking and enrolled in at least one credit during the semester of employment.
• Maintain Satisfactory Academic Progress.

• Experience in laboratory settings or prior laboratory assistant role.
• Knowledge of OSHA/MIOSHA regulations and chemical safety.

• Supervise stockroom activities and dispense supplies.
• Prepare stock solutions and maintain adequate inventories.
• Assist with ordering yearly materials.
• Maintain cleanliness and general maintenance of lab stations.
• Assist students in using specialized lab equipment and materials.
• Maintain a safe working environment and enforce safety regulations.
• Train new laboratory assistants.
• Apply MSDS publications and update them as needed.
• Develop methods for disposal of all types of chemicals.
• Complete assignments as required.

Stand, move around the center, sit, use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, reach with hands and arms, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl, talk or hear, taste or smell. Occasionally lift and move up to 25 pounds. Visual tasks include close, distance, color, peripheral, and depth vision.

10-15 hours per week, dependent upon your work‑study award.

Hourly rate: $13.73 per hour.
