Tutor Position

Under the direct supervision of the Site Supervisor, the Tutor will provide virtual and classroom instruction, assistance and tutoring to students in the after-school program and will lead engaging culturally rich academic activities. We are looking for a patient, engaging, and knowledgeable English/Social Sciences Tutor to support middle school students (grades 6–8) in building confidence and skills in mathematics. The tutor will help students understand core English/Social Science concepts, complete homework, and prepare for quizzes and exams, while fostering a positive attitude toward learning.

Tutors will also be responsible for working with student's teachers to gain knowledge on what material to cover during the after school program.

Essential duties and responsibilities include:

  • Ensuring programs and activities adhere to current health and safety protocols.
  • Supervising members in program area; continually monitoring and supervising the safety and behavior of members; maintaining a safe, positive atmosphere; implementing discipline techniques and classroom management.
  • Demonstrating positive values and ethical behavior through program quality and appearance of the Club at all times.
  • Leading organized learning activities for students to develop and strengthen their academic skills.
  • Participating as an active, positive team member with supervisor, other staff, volunteers and members at all times by communicating effectively.
  • Developing culturally relevant daily lesson plans and activities.
  • Differentiating lessons and activities so they are appropriate to students with various abilities.
  • Coordinating assigned program services and cooperative learning activities for youth that are both fun and instructional. Participating in and evaluating the effectiveness of activities and events.
  • Planning and leading programs, services and a variety of activities for members; promoting and stimulating program participation. Providing guidance and role modeling to members.
  • Responsible for daily set-up and clean-up of all materials used during the program.
  • Ensuring equipment is in good condition, with safety precautions posted (where needed) and members instructed in proper and safe use of equipment.
  • Maintaining accurate program attendance records and submitting them in a timely manner.
  • Assessing facility needs and performing janitorial duties or manual labor as needed – mopping, cleaning tables, trash removal, painting, playing games, moving equipment, etc.
  • Displaying a high level of enthusiasm and commitment for activities.
  • Providing small-group tutoring in middle school English/Social Science topics, including:
    Reading Comprehension, Research, Writing, Presentation.
  • Developing tailored lesson plans based on each student's needs and learning pace.
  • Supporting students with homework, test prep, and study strategies.
  • Explaining concepts clearly and in age-appropriate language.
  • Tracking student progress and communicating updates to parents or guardians.
  • Encouraging critical thinking and a growth mindset in students.
  • Creating a supportive and distraction-free learning environment.
  • Other duties as necessary
  • Safety and wellness responsibilities include:

  • Ensuring a safe, clean, and welcoming environment for all youth, staff, and visitors by consistently enforcing safety protocols and organizational policies.
  • Being proactive in identifying and reporting any safety concerns or maintenance requirements to ensure a safe working environment for everyone.
  • Participating in safety drills and contributing to ongoing risk assessment and emergency preparedness efforts.
  • Contributing to the ongoing improvement of Club safety and wellness policies and procedures across the Club.
  • Qualifications include:

  • Must be at least 18 years of age with a High School diploma or GED required.
  • A minimum of 48 units of college curriculum or completion of the Classroom Assistant Proficiency Exam (CAPE) required; or a combination of knowledge and experience.
  • Two (2) years' experience working directly with school aged youth and knowledge of youth development preferred.
