Summary

Lead Network Systems Engineer – requires onsite work. Position open until filled.

Responsibilities
  • Lead, plan, train, and review staff responsible for development, installation, implementation, testing, evaluation, and administration of local and wide area networks.
  • Train assigned employees in network systems methods, procedures, and techniques.
  • Verify work of assigned employees for accuracy, proper methods, and compliance with standards.
  • Install and configure complex network hardware, software, and peripherals; troubleshoot and resolve server and networked device issues.
  • Oversee and participate in installing and maintaining network components including routers, switches, bridges, hubs, digital service units, channel service units, and other equipment.
  • Investigate, analyze, and resolve complex network‑related problems; recommend and implement changes and improvements.
  • Evaluate network protocols, hardware, and software to determine suitability for City network needs.
  • Monitor network security and performance; identify unauthorized access and potential risks.
  • Provide support to network server administrative and maintenance operations; perform backups and install and configure software.
  • Provide advanced desktop support to clients; install and configure hardware, software, OS, and peripherals.
  • Perform technical writing duties developing system documentation, instructional and procedural manuals.
  • Research and recommend purchase of computer equipment and peripherals; order as necessary.
  • Collaborate with customers to determine best hardware and software for departmental projects.
  • Perform complex system‑wide or network‑wide audits, and generate performance and security reports.
  • Assist other departments in designing, authoring documents/programs; customize installed software as required.
  • Develop network and system topology maps for staff understanding.
  • Collaborate with other positions to learn day‑to‑day operations.
  • Respond to public inquiries courteously and resolve complaints efficiently.
  • Estimate time, materials, and equipment for assigned jobs; requisition materials as required.
  • Perform related duties as required.
Qualifications / Knowledge
  • Operations, services, and activities of a comprehensive local and wide area network program.
  • Principles of lead supervision and training.
  • Advanced principles and practices of network system design, installation and maintenance.
  • Advanced principles of hardware and software configuration and installation.
  • Experience with all operating systems in use:
    Windows Desktop, Windows Server, Microsoft Hyper‑V, Apple iOS.
  • All aspects of configuring and maintaining system security, network security, and site security for information systems.
  • All available WAN technologies currently in use; installation and maintenance of routers, switches, access points, wireless LAN equipment and firewalls.
  • LAN maintenance, installation, troubleshooting – particularly TCP/IP.
  • Advanced troubleshooting of hardware and software problems.
  • Cabling protocols, hardware, and software.
  • Technical specifications, standard performance, and configuration options for common components and peripherals.
  • Distributed database installation, structuring, maintenance, and troubleshooting.
  • Internet, HTML, CGI scripting, desktop publishing or user interface design.
  • National telecommunications infrastructure knowledge; ability to work with providers.
  • Customer service principles.
  • Pertinent federal, state and local codes, laws and regulations.
