Summary Description
Under supervision (Network Systems Technician I) or general supervision (Network Systems Technician II), provides liaison and technical assistance to system users for computer, phone, and network related problems; consults with department representative to determine hardware/software requirements and develops specifications; sets up, configures and provides support for desktop computer equipment including hardware, software, and peripheral equipment; upgrades existing hardware and software; provides technical assistance in support of networked systems;
and works on network projects as needed.
This entry-level class performs the more routine tasks and duties in configuring and maintaining desktop computers and routine network maintenance, supervised work, and requires less independent discretion. Advancement to II occurs upon proficiency and supervisory discretion.
Network Systems Technician IIThis full-journey level class performs the full range of duties with occasional instruction, maintains network connectivity with City network, VoIP phones, routers, switches, resolves network issues, enforces security, and participates in projects. Typically filled by advancement from the I level and requires completion of a recognized certification program or additional specialized coursework.
Key Responsibilities- Install, test, configure and troubleshoot hardware and software applications on networked systems.
- Set up and install computers, phones, servers, and networks, including cabling and wiring.
- Maintain routers, switches, wireless equipment, and troubleshoot network problems.
- Repair computer systems and peripheral equipment, coordinate vendor repairs, and ship parts.
- Conduct system and database backups and maintain backup procedures.
- Assist information systems staff in evaluating, selecting, acquiring, and implementing hardware and software.
- Monitor computer systems, networks, and applications for performance and resource utilization.
- Perform network administration duties such as adding applications, users, devices, resetting passwords, monitoring storage, and documenting changes.
- Conduct training sessions with desktop users and communicate system and application functions.
- Assist with network security by monitoring, installing updates, and staying abreast of security trends.
- Stay abreast of new IT trends and innovations; pursue relevant training.

All applicants must provide technical assistance and support to system users in the police department. The position requires honesty and ethical character traits expected of civilian personnel working with law enforcement, a successful police department background investigation, and passing a polygraph examination.
Education/TrainingEquivalent to completion of the twelfth grade and college-level coursework in information systems, computer science, or a related field.
Experience Network Systems Technician IOne year full-time equivalent of experience in information systems within a networked environment. Additional education or training may substitute up to one year of experience.
Network Systems Technician IITwo years full-time equivalent of increasingly responsible experience comparable to a Technician I with the City of Escondido. Additional education or training may substitute up to one year of experience.
License or Certificate Network Systems Technician IHardware, Microsoft, Cisco, or Dell certifications preferred.
