This position is budgeted to start at $18.67 per hour.
This is a non-benefitted, budgeted position limited to 999 hours per fiscal year.
This is not a PERS eligible position.
The City of Escondido is hiring enthusiastic and fun Water Safety Instructors to teach in our year‑round Learn to Swim Program. Applicants must be available a minimum of 15 hours a week. Interested candidates who desire to earn their certifications through the City of Escondido may be eligible for scholarships to obtain both certifications.
The upcoming Lifeguard Academies are scheduled for the weekend of April 18 & 19, or weekend of May 30 & 31.
Key Responsibilities- Complete online and in‑person training, including shadowing and co‑teaching swim lessons up to three hours in the water.
- Co‑create and follow lesson plans, evaluate student skills and progress, and provide feedback to swimmers and their guardians.
- Serve as a lifeguard on shifts in addition to swim instructor duties.
- Demonstrate preventive lifeguarding skills, activate the Emergency Action Plan, rescue swimmers in distress, and render first aid as needed.
- Provide thorough documentation for necessary forms and reports.
- Enforce pool rules and regulations.
- Maintain positive public relations and be knowledgeable in Community Service programs.
- Report pool repairs as necessary to supervisors.
- Maintain safe and clean conditions in pool and bathroom areas.
- Demonstrate proper cash handling skills, and maintain an accurate till.
- Register participants in recreation software.
- Attend in‑service trainings.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Enjoys teaching swim lessons to a diverse group of ages and abilities in an outdoor Aquatics facility.
- Is a positive team member focused on creating a fun and welcoming learn‑to‑swim experience for all.
- Can multitask and ensure a safe and fun swimming environment.
- Must be 16 years of age.
- Ability to train and obtain Starfish Aquatics Institute Instructor 1 Certification.
- American Red Cross Lifeguarding Certification in deep water (must be obtained if not already held).
- American Red Cross lifeguarding certification, or equivalent.
- CPR for the Professional Rescuer.
- American First Aid for the Public Safety Personnel (Title 22).
- Water Safety Instructor certification, or equivalent.
Certifications are not required at time of interview; current certifications are required upon hiring. Scholarships are available for applicants interested in receiving their Lifeguard certificate through our Lifeguard Academy.
Additional InformationAll applicants will undergo a medical examination and drug screen (including cannabis) following a conditional offer of employment. The City of Escondido is committed to a drug and alcohol‑free workplace.
All positions are subject to background investigation, including fingerprinting, and proof of legal right to work in the United States.
All applicants must be able to read, write, and speak English. The selection process may include written, oral, physical agility, and practical examinations.
