Job Description
Must have a New Mexico Public Education K-12 Special Education teaching license.
Qualifications- Properly certified in all areas of assignment
- Demonstrate cooperativeness and willingness to carry‑out assigned tasks and performance responsibilities
- Bilingual endorsement is highly preferable
- Other qualifications determined necessary by the Board
Reports To:
Principal or designee/Director of Special Programs. General Supervisor:
Superintendent.
To provide each educable student with a program that will enable him/her to reach his/her fullest physical, emotional, psychological, and behavioral potential through an individualized education plan.
Performance Responsibilities- Provide a basis care program for educable students consistent with state education code requirements and locally adopted guidelines.
- Coordinate and supervise work experience and on‑campus job training involving the Special Education student.
- Work cooperatively with classroom teachers who have Special Education students in regular classes, interpreting the abilities and disabilities of these students to the entire staff, and assisting the student with regular class assignments.
- Confer frequently with parents and professional staff members regarding the student’s wellness strengths, educational, social, personal behavior problems and progress of such students.
- Assist other professional staff members in resolving the unique psychological learning or disciplinary problems of each student.
- Assist in screening, evaluating and recommending placements of applicants in the school’s Special Education Program.
- Counsel individuals and groups of Special Education students with educational occupations and personal problems.
- Assist the Special Education students in making a realistic assessment of his/her abilities and in establishing educational and occupational goals in keeping with these abilities.
- Provide motivation to students who have a short attention span.
- Establish and maintain standards of individual student behavior.
- Undertake continuing professional study of the psychology of the special education student and bilingual education, referencing teaching methods related to this field.
- Keep attendance records and all other records pertinent to student activities, including in and out of school activities.
- Participate in faculty committees and the sponsorship of student activities, including in and out of school activities.
- Implement EPSS and participate in curriculum development programs, curriculum benchmarks, alignment, performance standards/assessments and revisions, inclusive of the bilingual curriculum, and provide input in developing/modifying IEPs.
- Gather data in order to develop strategies for student improvement.
- Initiate the selection of equipment and materials and maintain required inventory records.
- Supervise pupil in and out of school activities as assigned.
- Participate cooperatively with the appropriate administrators to develop the method by which the teacher will be evaluated in conformance with district guidelines.
- Administer group standardized tests in accordance with the district testing program.
- Administer the Language Assessment Scale testing and scoring in both English and Spanish.
- Participate in filling out time study for Medicaid reimbursement.
- Attend board meetings at the request of the Superintendent or his/her authorized designee.
- Arrange and attend field trips (example: trips to the zoo, State Fair, swimming, bowling, etc.).
- Accompany students to bathrooms, assist with toileting, and lift as needed to assist a student.
- Rearrange classroom to accommodate student learning activities, develop learning centers and/or quiet areas.
- Transfer and/or relocate student working files.
- Some travel involved from school to central office and other locations as needed.
- Perform other assigned tasks required of the supervisor(s).
Term of employment is to be established on an annual basis, through the adoption of the school calendar.
