Position: Vehicle Equipment Mechanic I

Vehicle/Equipment Mechanic I

The Vehicle/Equipment Mechanic I is responsible for the maintenance, repairs, and safe operation of college automotive vehicles and motorized equipment.

Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent with two years of auto mechanic experience required.
  • Minimum of two (2) ASE Automobile Certifications preferred.
  • Flexibility and ability to change shift when requested.
  • Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record of less than five (5) points.
  • Ability to participate in blood borne pathogens training within six (6) months of employment.
  • Hepatitis B vaccination or a signed waiver.
Background Check
  • Candidates may be required to successfully pass a background investigation, to include driving, fingerprint and criminal history evaluation.
  • Candidates may be required to successfully complete a pre-hire, post-offer physical examination, including drug screening.

This is an Essential Position and the employee must be available for campus emergencies, and to perform regular duties or other assigned duties at times when the campus is closed to students and non-essential staff. Subject to 24‑hours standby or call‑in for campus emergencies. May be required to work overtime or special hours as needed or required.

Reflected in Position Specific Essential Duties

  • Analyzes the reported malfunctions of components on all types of automotive and mechanical equipment to determine the type of failure and the necessary repair procedure.
  • Determines the need for new parts, plans and performs the necessary operations for reworking of parts to usable condition by reassembling, replacing, adjusting and testing the components.
  • Performs adjustments and repairs to minor components such as brakes, ignitions, carburetor, generator, and electrical system.
  • Removes, disassembles, and reassembles major components such as differentials, auxiliary drives, and similar equipment.
  • Performs general maintenance on equipment such as lubrication, charging batteries, changing coolants, adding brake fluid.
  • Maintains and repairs chassis, frames and bodies.
  • Checks and adjusts wheels and chassis alignment.
  • Inspects extent of body and frame damage. Straightens, aligns and/or removes dents.
  • Rework vehicles and equipment to improve performance, safety and durability.
  • Instructs and guides lesser skilled workers in performance of related tasks.
  • Performs tank readings, maintains logs and assists in the coordination of tank inspections/ maintenance in compliance of Maryland Department of Environment regulations.
  • Cleans fleet motor vehicles in preparation of use of campus constituents.
  • Participates in snow removal or duties assigned in response to college emergencies, as necessary and/or directed.
  • Assists in the implementation of college and non-college events/activities.
  • Effectively performs in a service environment and follows all county, state, college, and departmental policies and procedures.
