Job Description & How to Apply Below

CNC Machinist

This role offers the opportunity to perform high-level CNC setup and machining on large precision components within a clean, well-organized job shop environment. You will work with a variety of CNC and manual machines, primarily using Fanuc controls, to produce and repair tight-tolerance parts for critical power generation applications. All new hires receive comprehensive training on first shift before moving into their designated shift and division.

Responsibilities

  • Set up and operate a variety of CNC machine tools, including Mazak, Haas, Doosan, Johnford, Okuma, Puma, and Alpha machines, to produce precision parts to tight tolerances (down to +/- 0.0001).
  • Perform full CNC setups, including tool changes, offsets, and adjusting speeds and feeds to optimize machining performance and part quality.
  • Interpret and edit G and M codes, understanding the function of each code, and make program edits as needed using Fanuc controls and Mastercam-generated programs.
  • Perform manual machining operations on vertical turret lathes (VTLs), Bridge ports, manual mills, manual lathes, and turning centers as required.
  • Calculate dimensions and tolerances using shop math and measuring instruments such as micrometers, calipers, verniers, and gauges.
  • Align and secure holding fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories, and materials onto machines to ensure safe and accurate setups.
  • Read and interpret standard and advanced blueprints, including GD&T symbols, to determine machining operations, sequence, and dimensions.
  • Conduct in-process and final quality inspections using micrometers, calipers, gauges, and other precision measuring tools to verify parts meet specifications.
  • Perform changeovers on machines for shorter production runs, ensuring efficient setup and minimal downtime between jobs.
  • Operate overhead cranes to safely load and unload large parts, including components up to approximately six-foot beds.
  • Execute surface grinding on flat plates when required to achieve specified finishes and tolerances.
  • Follow job shop practices by working on multiple, varied jobs rather than repetitive production, especially in the bearings, seals, and hydraulics division.
  • Collaborate with team members and follow established machining procedures, safety standards, and quality processes across different divisions.
  • Participate in training on first shift for at least 90 days, learning company-specific processes, equipment, and safety practices before transitioning to the assigned shift.
  • Support outage season work by maintaining a full schedule and being available for additional hours as needed, particularly on second shift.

Essential Skills

  • At least 3 years of high-level CNC setup experience on larger parts, including G and M coding and program edits.
  • Proficiency with Fanuc controls for CNC machining and program adjustments.
  • Demonstrated experience loading and positioning large parts using an overhead crane.
  • Strong ability to read and interpret blueprints, including complex and advanced drawings.
  • Hands-on experience performing quality inspections using micrometers, calipers, gauges, and verniers.
  • Solid understanding of GD&T and shop math to calculate dimensions, tolerances, and machining parameters.
  • Practical knowledge of mechanics, shop math, metal properties, layout, and standard machining procedures.
  • Ability to perform CNC setups on multiple machine brands, including Mazak, Haas, Doosan, Johnford, Okuma, Puma, and Alpha.
  • Capability to adjust speeds and feeds, perform tool changes, and manage tool offsets to achieve optimal results.
  • Comfort working with tight tolerances, including production runs held to +/- 0.0001.
  • Experience operating in a job shop environment with varied, non-repetitive work.
  • Ability to safely operate and work around large machining equipment and overhead lifting devices.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Manual machining experience on VTLs, Bridge ports, manual mills, manual lathes, and turning centers.
  • Full CNC programming experience, either conversational or using CAD/CAM systems.
  • Mastercam experience for programming and editing CNC machining operations.
  • Tool and die experience, particularly with precision tooling and complex components.
  • Surface grinding experience on flat plates to achieve specified finishes and tolerances.
  • Experience with large-part machining, including components up to approximately six-foot beds.
  • Experience in vertical turret lathe operations and complex job shop work.
  • Familiarity with working in repair services or outage-related environments where schedules can be intensive and time-sensitive.
