The ideal candidate will have a passion for kayaking, water safety, and environmental education. This role involves welcoming patrons, assisting with equipment selection, transporting patrons and equipment, and providing educational experiences about kayaking and local biodiversity. Additionally, the guide will help with daily janitorial duties along trip routes and in operational areas.
Water Safety Guide Duties- Welcome Patrons:
Greet and welcome patrons, ensuring they feel comfortable and informed about their kayaking experience. - Assist with Equipment:
Help patrons select appropriate kayaks and safety equipment, ensuring all gear is properly fitted and in good condition. - Transport Equipment:
Transport patrons and equipment to the launch point, ensuring safe and efficient handling of all items. - Educational Guidance:
Assist, learn, and teach patrons about kayaking techniques, water safety protocols, and the biodiversity of the area. - Janitorial Duties:
Perform daily janitorial tasks along trip routes, retail, and operational areas, including restrooms, to maintain cleanliness and hygiene. - Physical Requirements:
This job includes standing, sitting, stooping, and regular lifting and storing kayaks weighing up to 70 pounds. - Performs other duties as assigned.
- This is a seasonal position with a fluctuating schedule.
- The season starts at Memorial Day and ramps up to a 7-day-a-week operation during the summer months.
- The schedule ramps down from September through November.
- Seasonal training will start in April.
- Experience sufficient to thoroughly understand the task assigned and to be able to answer questions and resolve problems, usually associated with customer service positions.
- Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver’s license issued by the State of Alabama for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
- Must be willing to pass Water Safety training as part of the interview process.
- Experience in kayaking and water safety.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to educate and engage with patrons of all ages.
- Physical fitness to handle the demands of the job.
- Willing to complete Red Cross Water Safety, First Aid, CPR, and AED training and certification.
- Must be at least 16 years of age.
- Commitment to environmental conservation and education.
- Must pass physical and drug screening.
- The work consists of varied duties. The variety of tasks contributes to the complexity of the work.
- The purpose of this position is to assist with Parks and Recreation recreational programming. Successful performance in this position contributes to the efficient and effective delivery of recreation services to area residents.
- Outdoor setting with exposure to various weather conditions.
- Active and physically demanding role.
- AMIC (Alabama Municipal Insurance Corporation) regulations, professional standards, Red Cross guidelines, and city and department policies and procedures.
