Principal Architect

We're seeking a dynamic Principal Architect to lead the Facilities Design & Construction team and guide essential capital projects from big-idea vision through design, construction, and close-out. The City of Eugene determines starting pay within the range based on relevant education and experience as provided by the applicant in their application materials. This process is consistent with the Oregon Equal Pay Act (OEPA).

The ideal candidate for this position will bring strong leadership, strategic oversight, and technical expertise to guide complex facilities planning, architectural design, and capital project delivery for the City of Eugene. They will be skilled at leading diverse teams, managing competing priorities, and fostering a positive, inclusive, and collaborative work environment. Some key characteristics that will ensure success in this role include:

Leadership and Staff Management

  • Manages the activities of the section; plans, prioritizes, assigns, and reviews the work of staff involved in facility project management and property management/leasing.
  • Hires, transfers, suspends, lays off, recalls, promotes, discharges, assigns, rewards or disciplines other employees, adjusts their grievances, or effectively recommends such action.
  • Provides leadership and facilitates staff development on such issues as diversity and creating a respectful working environment.
  • Serves on task teams as a team leader or a source of expertise.
  • Serves as acting Facilities Director as required.
  • Promotes a positive, welcoming and inclusive work environment.
  • Actively supports and respects diversity in the workplace.

Facility Planning, Design, and Project Management

  • Leads and oversees the design of facility improvements and architectural design projects, including concept development, all phases of the design process, contract administration and project close-out.
  • Manages planning and design issues between design professionals and appropriate City staff; coordinates technical review process with appropriate City staff.
  • Collaborate with clients to understand their needs, develop design concepts, and present proposals.
  • Review and approve architectural plans, drawings, and specifications to ensure design integrity and compliance with regulations.
  • Prepares new formats for projects, construction-related forms and standard communication tools.
  • Operates fleet vehicle to commute between City facilities and job sites and/or other locations related to job duties.
