Position Summary

Job Title: Instructor Pool – Political Science

Department: Social Science Division, Lane Community College

Location: Main Campus, Eugene, Oregon

Status: Part‑time faculty (contracted, temporary)

Anticipated Start: Upon hire, based on departmental need

Schedule: Classes assigned by Division Dean; includes online and in‑classroom instruction

Compensation: Hourly; step 1 – step 10 salary schedule

Benefits: Part‑time faculty benefits package includes contributions toward medical, dental, vision, life, long‑term disability insurance, and paid sick leave; eligibility for full contracted benefits after meeting criteria

Responsibilities

Essential Functions:

  • Exhibit compliance with college policies and procedures, including leave time, timesheet completion, release time, textbook ordering and related functions.
  • Sustain currency in discipline and innovation in teaching.
  • Engage collegially in the faculty performance evaluation process.
  • Maintain and post office hours in alignment with college expectations.
  • Maintain a physical campus presence for instruction and daily needs as specified in College Operations Policies and Procedures.
  • Maintain student records, attendance, grades, and documentation; ensure a safe, quality classroom or lab with equipment, supplies, and inventory.
  • Problem‑solve and manage sensitive information with appropriate awareness of FERPA standards; maintain confidentiality.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Curriculum Delivery:

  • Provide high‑quality classroom instruction and/or online teaching.
  • Create, develop, and revise course content and materials.
  • Establish learning outcomes aligned with core ability outcomes, assess and use assessment results for improvement.
  • Incorporate college values and foster a respectful learning environment, including multicultural and diversity awareness.
  • Teach and develop syllabi and course materials in a format usable by students.
  • Confer with students on course materials.
  • Deliver curriculum in traditional and online formats.

Online Teaching and Student Support:

  • Engage within the online course environment to ensure regular and substantive interaction.
  • Monitor student progress and provide coaching and assistance to struggling students.
  • Review and grade all student work and provide timely feedback.
  • Provide timely responses to student inquiries.
  • Ensure all materials meet Section 508 guidelines.
  • Use effective strategies for teaching online.

Qualifications

Required

Education:

Master’s degree in Political Science or a related field from a regionally accredited institution.

Required Experience: None specified beyond necessary credentials, but successful applicants must pass a criminal background check and reside in Oregon at the time work is performed.

Preferred Experience:

  • Teaching experience with community college student populations.
  • Experience teaching online.
  • Experience with learning management systems.
  • Multilingual ability to support and welcome all students.
