Position: Extended School Year (ESY) Speech and Language Specialist
Position Overview
Seasonal hourly position for the 2026 Extended School Year (ESY) Program in Eugene School District 4J. This role is a specialized staff member in diagnosing student needs in speech and language and works collaboratively with school personnel to design and implement remediation plans. The position is a full member of building staff and Educational Support Services and is supervised by the principal in collaboration with Educational Support Services.

Program runs for 4 weeks:
July 7, 8, 9 (Week
1), July 14, 15, 16 (Week
2), July 21, 22, 23 (Week
3), and July 28, 29, 30 (Week
4). Staff work hours are 8:00 AM – 12:00 PM; student hours are 8:30 AM – 11:30 PM.
All ESY staff receive paid training and set‑up time on July 2 from 8:00 AM – 12:00 PM.
Essential Functions
Cultivates and models a respectful working and learning environment.Plans and implements a program of study following federal, state and district goals and school curriculum that meets individual student needs and development.Plans and implements the student's IEP for speech/language by selecting activities, materials and methods related to diagnostic findings and evaluation team recommendations.Evaluates the needs and abilities of referred students.Organizes and conducts IEP meetings and manages the IEP process in accordance with law and district requirements.Establishes and maintains open lines of communication with students and parents/guardians concerning academic and behavioral progress.Assists the administration in implementing all policies governing student conduct, develops reasonable classroom behavior rules, and maintains order in a fair and just manner.Maintains accurate, complete and confidential records as required by law, district policy and administrative regulations.Pursues professional competence through ongoing workshops, seminars, conferences, classes and other development activities.Communicates effectively in oral and written form with students, parents and staff.Implements individual plans (IEP).Participates in building‑level student support meetings and multidisciplinary teams to determine eligibility and service needs.Attends Educational Support Services staff meetings.Participates in staff meetings, speech and language specialist meetings, in‑service meetings and other meetings as appropriate.Familiar with district procedures and guidelines as well as speech and language procedures.Works effectively and collaboratively with diverse students, staff and community populations.Works with team members to accomplish mutually agreed‑upon goals.Responds to feedback from colleagues and administrators to improve services to students.Manages time to complete required special education paperwork.Utilizes technology to manage all components of student programs.Anticipates program needs and coordinates implementation of program components.Performs other duties as requested by the Educational Support Services Administrator.Effectively works with and responds to people from diverse cultures or backgrounds.Qualifications
- Experience differentiating practices for diverse populations.
- Ability to work effectively and collaboratively with diverse students, staff and community populations.
- Valid Oregon teacher’s license with a Speech/Language endorsement.
- ESOL endorsement preferred.
- Evidence of multicultural experience and cultural competency.
- Bilingual and/or multicultural experience strongly preferred.
