Description

Bethel School District is seeking qualified applicants for a 7‑hour per day Life Skills Assistant for Willamette High School for the 2026‑27 school year. This role provides individual and small group support and personal assistance to students with distinct and exceptional behavioral needs and challenges as determined by a licensed specialist.

Nature of Work

A Life Skills Assistant implements specific protocols in individualized behavior intervention plans, provides active supervision to students with such plans, and maintains student progress data. The assistant may work 1:1, in small or large group settings, supporting individual students or multiple students across programs. The role also involves collecting assessment information and progress data from behavior intervention plans, staff and parent interviews, observations, and academic assessments.

Examples

of Work
  • Implement individualized behavior intervention plans that include pre‑correcting for expected behavior, providing social skills and anger management instruction, redirection, positive reinforcement and consequences.
  • Assist in developing lesson plans for students, prepare instructional materials, provide instructional assistance, tutor, read and paraphrase tests, and assist with problem solving skills.
  • Create materials related to behavior intervention plans, such as point sheets, picture schedules, assignment sheets, and home‑to‑school communication systems.
  • Observe and participate in recording student progress and correcting papers; confer and consult regularly with teachers about problems encountered with students, and share behavioral and academic observations with the instructor and/or specialist.
  • Perform clerical and word processing or computer database updating duties as time permits.
Selection Factors
  • Knowledge of effective strategies for behavior management and support.
  • Ability to prepare materials for lesson plans.
  • Ability to interact positively with children and adults, and observe individual student behaviors and abilities.
  • Ability to work with a minimum of supervision.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with teachers, students, administrators, parents, and co‑workers.
  • Ability to maintain appropriate confidentiality regarding students, staff, and other individuals.
  • Ability to maintain regular, predictable, and prompt attendance.
Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent. Previous coursework and training or experience in child development, childcare, or instructional assistance that demonstrates possession of the knowledge and abilities needed to perform the work. Ability to prove Highly Qualified status under NCLB, or pass Bethel School District’s “Highly Qualified Assessment”. Any satisfactory equivalent combination of experience and training may be substituted for the required experience.

Upon offer of employment, applicants must obtain a fingerprint clearance from the Oregon Department of Education. Applicants are responsible for the one‑time clearance fee.
