Master Gardener

Special Instructions: This position is a part‑time (approximately 32 hours per week) role in the Division of Extension and Engagement’s Extension Lane County office, located in Eugene, Oregon. Volunteer experience that meets the responsibilities should be documented with duration, hours per week, and major duties.

Job Summary

Assist the Community Horticulture faculty member with volunteer management, educational delivery, outreach, and record‑keeping for the Master Gardener volunteer program. The role supports equity, diversity, and inclusive access to educational programs and requires effective communication, digital communication skills, and occasional travel throughout Lane County.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide logistical support for Master Gardener volunteers, including training, orientation, workshops, and events.
  • Manage volunteer communication via phone, email, and in‑person.
  • Maintain volunteer records, hour tracking, and program materials.
  • Prepare program reports, publications, and performance summaries.
  • Follow OSU and division brand guidelines and digital publishing standards.
  • Maintain inventory of supplies needed for the program.
  • Collaborate with community partners and local stakeholders independently.
  • Coordinate delivery of non‑credit educational programs using approved curricula that meet national and state standards.
  • Assist in developing and enforcing volunteer rules and procedures.
  • Schedule volunteers and coordinate volunteer activity log‑ins.
  • Deliver basic technical content at workshops; travel is required to serve Lane County communities.
  • Promote inclusive access and provide accommodations for diverse learners.
  • Explore and recommend partnerships for community assessment and program adjustments.
Outreach and Engagement (10%)
  • Market programs using digital communication tools; create news releases and event advertising.
  • Prepare training materials and handouts for events.
  • Develop and maintain educational content for displays and exhibits.
  • Schedule and orient volunteers at events and Extension office.
  • Set up educational displays and volunteer staffing at community events.
Service (5%)
  • Provide inclusive customer service to all participants.
  • Attend scheduled meetings, trainings, and community partner meetings.
  • Participate in Extension Service County office activities as directed.
Other Duties (5%)
  • Perform additional tasks as assigned by the supervising faculty.
  • Attend university‑mandated training opportunities and develop competence in digital communications.
  • Complete civil rights training and coordinate volunteer compliance.
What We Require

Associate’s degree and three years of paid or volunteer work supporting community programs that serve children, youth, or adults; or Bachelor’s degree and one year of experience in youth development, adult education, teaching, program delivery, or related functions; or five years of related field experience with a high school diploma or equivalent.

Demonstrated oral and written communication skills; skill working with diverse audiences; proficiency with computers for word processing, data management, and communications.

Working Conditions / Work Schedule

Flexible to work non‑standard hours (evenings and weekends) and various outdoor settings. Transport of up to 30 pounds is required. Driving/travel is required throughout Lane County; mileage will be reimbursed per OSU policies.

Background and Safety Information

Due to the critical or security‑sensitive nature of the role, a criminal history check is required. For volunteer programs, additional background checks may be required every 24 months. A motor vehicle history check and a valid driver’s license are also required. Applicants must self‑report convictions in accordance with University policy.
