Job Description

Bethel School District is seeking qualified applicants for a 6.5‑hour Educational Assistant III position to provide comprehensive student support on a one‑on‑one basis. The role involves instructional, behavioral, social‑emotional, and physical assistance to students with diverse needs as directed by licensed staff. The assistant supports students individually, in small groups, and across entire classrooms in both general education and special education settings.

In alignment with the district’s commitment to inclusion, this position helps create welcoming, responsive environments where all students—especially those with the highest needs—can access the resources, relationships, and opportunities they deserve. The assistant implements inclusive practices that remove barriers, foster belonging, and support students in thriving alongside peers. Staff are expected to participate in professional development opportunities focused on inclusive practices, behavior supports, and small‑group instruction.

Assignments
  • Academic support and instructional reinforcement
  • Implementation of individualized behavior support plans
  • Emotional and behavioral regulation support
  • Collaborate with licensed staff and school teams to support inclusive practices
Examples of Work
  • Facilitates instructional activities and use of materials developed by licensed staff
  • Supports students in acquiring academic, functional, communication, and social‑emotional skills
  • Administers and scores assessments; maintains documentation and daily progress records
  • Implements behavior support plans and follows Individualized Education Programs using proactive strategies such as pre‑correction, positive reinforcement, and de‑escalation
  • Provides assistance with personal care including toileting and hygiene routines
  • Uses adapted communication tools to support student participation and access
  • Supports inclusive instruction in general education classrooms and facilitates transitions across school settings
  • Participates in team planning, rounds, and debriefs focused on student inclusion and progress
  • Communicates effectively with students, teachers, specialists, and families
  • Models inclusive, strengths‑based language and practices
Supervision

The assistant reports to licensed staff (teachers, specialists) for professional guidance and to the building or special services administrators for administrative supervision. Work aligns with state and federal guidelines, IEP requirements, and district inclusive practices.

Required Knowledge, Skills, & Attributes
  • Understanding of inclusive education principles and a commitment to equity
  • Knowledge of educational strategies, behavior supports, and developmental needs
  • Ability to assist with instruction and implement individualized supports
  • Willingness to learn and apply safe health and hygiene practices
  • Capacity to use trauma‑informed and restorative practices
  • Ability to observe and respond appropriately to student behaviors and social‑emotional needs
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and follow legal and ethical standards
  • Flexibility and composure in fast‑paced and changing environments
  • Ability to maintain regular and predictable attendance
  • Ability to learn safe lifting and proper physical positioning techniques
  • Ability to safely and proficiently operate standard office and audio‑visual equipment
Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Experience or coursework in child development, special education, behavioral support, or related fields
  • Ability to prove Highly Qualified status under ESEA or pass the district’s “Highly Qualified” assessment
  • Completion of required training (Oregon‑approved de‑escalation, restraint, and seclusion training; toileting, health, and feeding protocols; and inclusive practices professional development) provided by the District
  • Physical ability to perform lifting, hygiene support, and mobility assistance
