Instructor Pool - American Sign Language (ASL)

The Humanities Division seeks to hire faculty to teach American Sign Language courses at various levels, based on candidate experience.

  • Salary/Wage: Hourly – initial placement determined by application; benefits include contributions toward medical, dental, vision, life, disability insurance, and paid sick leave.
Responsibilities
  • Provide high-quality classroom instruction in all formats (traditional, hybrid, online) for American Sign Language courses.
  • Create, develop, and revise course content and materials, ensuring alignment with core ability outcomes and assessment.
  • Maintain student records, attendance, grades, and documentation, ensuring compliance with FERPA and privacy standards.
  • Establish and maintain office hours and student support practices.
  • Participate collegially in faculty performance evaluation and continuous improvement processes.
  • Support student learning through activities that include compliance with College policies, accurate timesheet completion, provision of textbook ordering, and resource management.
  • Engage within online course environments to ensure Regular and Substantive Interaction, monitor progress, provide coaching, grade assignments, and deliver timely feedback.
  • Incorporate college values into curriculum, fostering a respectful learning environment and addressing multicultural and diversity issues.
  • Confer with students on course materials and deliver curriculum accordingly.
  • Implement assessment tools to evaluate outcomes and use results to improve program and course-level instruction.
Essential Functions
  • Maintain and exhibit compliance with College policies, accountability for leave time, timesheet completion, release time, textbook ordering, and related functions.
  • Sustain currency in discipline and innovation in teaching.
  • Maintain office hours in alignment with College expectations.
  • Problem‑solve and manage sensitive information with confidentiality and FERPA awareness.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in Sign Language Education, Deaf Education, Sign Language Teaching, Applied Linguistics, or closely related field from a regionally accredited institution.
  • ACTFL Superior proficiency in ASL.
  • Experience teaching American Sign Language at the community college level is preferred.
  • Experience designing and delivering Hybrid, Hyflex, or online courses is preferred.
  • Certification from the American Sign Language Teachers Association (ASLTA) – Certified Level is preferred.
  • Must be able to work and reside in the state of Oregon.
  • Successful applicants are required to complete a criminal background check.

Physical Demands

Position is indoors, typical office environment. Employee must be able to sit or stand for extended periods, perform cognitive work (>6 hours/day), and transport materials up to 25 pounds.
