Department Summary

The College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) is the intellectual hub ofthe University of Oregon, serving nearly two-thirds of all students. Home to more than 800 faculty across 50+ departments and programs in the humanities, natural sciences, and social sciences,CAS is a dynamic and interdisciplinary academic community. Our faculty and advisors work closely with students to develop critical thinking, analytical reasoning, and clear communication skills toaddress real-world challenges.

CAS staff and managers are integral to this work, playing vital roles in supporting academic excellence and advancing the mission of both the College and the University.

The Department of Physics is an instructional and research department within the College of Arts and Sciences that supports significant research activities in a wide range of fields in the Physics discipline. The department includes approximately 35teaching faculty in addition to emeritus faculty, research staff,graduate students, and professional/administrative staff. The department enrolls approximately 2,000 students per term, with approximately 200 undergraduate Physics majors and 100 graduate students.

Position Summary

The Department of Physics seeks to establish a pool of qualified applicants for temporary instructional positions. Pro Tem Instructors may teach lower-division foundational physics coursesas well as select upper-division courses, based on departmentalneeds and the qualifications of the Pro Tem Instructor.

Positions are limited duration appointments, potentially renewable up to a total of three years, based on programmatic need, funding,and performance. Screening of applications will take place as positions become available and continue until positions arefilled.

Minimum Requirements
  • Master's degree in Physics or related field.
  • Experience teaching in Physics or related field.
Professional Competencies
  • Ability to work effectively with faculty, staff, and students from a variety of diverse backgrounds.
  • Ability to contribute to institutional diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Ph.D in physics or related field.
