Two (2) years of post-secondary education or training with course work in English Language Learning, ESL , TESOL , or similar.

Two (2) years of experience in tutoring and/or providing individual learning support.

Licensure or Certification Requirements Conditions of Employment

Preferred Qualifications Preferred Education

  • Certificate, degree, or minor in TESOL or similar, or English as a Second Language major

  • Tutoring or individual mentoring at the college level
  • Student-facing work in a community college or higher education institution

Position

Purpose

Provide one-on-one and group support for students learning English through Lane’s non-credit English as a Second Language program, including leading tutoring sessions focused on homework, providing individual coaching in pronunciation, facilitating multi-level conversation groups, visiting classes upon invitation from faculty, and otherwise assisting students as they learn.

Essential Functions
  • Works independently and as part of a team.
  • Tutors students in specific ESL subject matter as recommended by program leads, curriculum, and faculty in the area.
  • Mentors peer/student tutors as assigned.
  • Assists students to work through assigned materials or self-instructional modules.
  • Observes and diagnoses areas that are causing the student problems in their course assignments, work, or personal correspondence or communication.
  • Models and practices written and spoken English with students at multiple levels of learning, from pre-literacy through fluency.
  • Discusses problem areas with students and provides explanation, clarification, reference materials or examples.
