About the Eugene Police Department

The Eugene Police Department (EPD) is a progressive, professional law‑enforcement agency that serves the city of Eugene, Oregon. EPD works in partnership with the community to promote safety and security, enforce laws, prevent crimes, and safeguard the constitutional rights of all people.

Position Overview

This role requires a police officer to perform a wide range of duties, including first responder to incidents, direct link between the department and the public, responding to and investigating incident scenes, assessing appropriate actions to incidents, patrolling assigned areas, enforcing laws and ordinances, making arrests, preserving crime‑scene evidence, summarizing events in report format, and performing preventative community policing in diverse neighborhoods.

Process
  • ORPAT practice session – Saturday, May 30, 2026, 9‑11 a.m. (optional, apply by May 27, 2026).
  • Written test and ORPAT – Saturday, June 27, 2026.
  • Interviews – June 28‑30, 2026 (Sunday‑Tuesday). Out‑of‑state applicants are given preference for Sunday, June 28, 2026.
  • Full background completion by August 28, 2026.
  • Chief interview – September 1, 2026.
  • Psychological evaluation and medical exam – September 4‑11, 2026.
  • Projected date of hire – October 19, 2026.
  • Note:

    All candidates must test directly with the City of Eugene for the written and physical ability tests. We do not accept prior results, National Testing Network results, or results from other agencies.

    Application Requirements
    • At least 21 years of age by October 31, 2026.
    • No felony convictions; no Class A misdemeanor convictions within 24 months of application.
    • Must be able to work various shifts, nights, weekends, and holidays; patrol teams currently work a 4/10 schedule.
    • Must meet State requirements (vision, hearing, basic certification) as set by the Department of Public Safety Standards and Training (DPSST).
    • Valid Oregon driver’s license (or ability to obtain by date of hire). Must pass a driving records check.
    • CPR certification within twelve months of appointment.
    • Must pass a drug test, hearing test, and visual acuity test.
    • Must pass a police background investigation (specific documents listed on the posting).
    • Fluency in a language in addition to English is desirable; preference may be given for Spanish or Sign Language.
    Education

    High school diploma or GED.

    Experience

    At least two years of work experience, college coursework, or military experience.

    Salary & Benefits

    Entry police officers begin at Step 1. For candidates with a minimum of 3 years of full‑time police service at a municipal, county, or state agency, the lateral officer posting is available. Hourly rates range from $37.59 at Step 1 to $47.92 at Step
    6. Base salaries range from $78,187.20 to $99,673.60 annually, with possible premium pay for education, certification, or a 5 % increase for bilingual fluency. Additional shift differentials up to 5 % may apply.

    Benefits include a robust package which can be reviewed on the “Benefits” and “Benefits Package” web pages. The City of Eugene also offers a bilingual pay benefit of up to 5 % of base wages for qualified employees who pass a fluency examination.

    Work Location & Schedule

    300 Country Club Rd., Eugene, OR. Candidates must reside within 45 minutes of Eugene, OR. The schedule requires various shifts, nights, weekends and holidays. Police officers currently work a 4/10 work schedule with a 45‑minute on‑call response time.
