Web Accessibility Specialist

Position Summary

The Web Accessibility Specialist supports the University of Oregon’s commitment to digital accessibility by evaluating, guiding, and consulting on the accessibility of university websites, web-based systems, and mobile applications. This role is vital to ensuring compliance with accessibility standards and regulations, improving the user experience for individuals with disabilities, and empowering stakeholders to provide inclusive digital content.

The Specialist conducts manual accessibility evaluations informed by automated evaluations, identifying barriers in university websites, mobile apps, and online systems.

Key responsibilities include:

• Conducting expert technical audits.
• Providing expert-level training and consulting.
• Managing automated scanning tools.
• Tracking compliance and ensuring operations align with governance recommendations and university strategies.
• Assessing technology solutions for web accessibility compliance and advising on best practices.
• Providing content remediation support and equipping content creators with knowledge and tools to address accessibility issues at scale.
• Developing tailored accessibility materials and delivering training on platforms such as MyTrack and Linked In Learning.
• Maintaining web-based accessibility guidelines and best practices.
• C herping closely with university departments, web developers, content creators, and governance groups as a subject matter expert.

The incumbent will have a detailed understanding of WCAG 2.1 AA standards and be proficient in conducting manual evaluations using assistive technologies such as JAWS, NVDA, and Voice Over, as well as automated tools like Dub Bot. Proficiency in HTML, CSS, and ARIA, and the ability to support remediation efforts for documents, multimedia, and other digital assets, is required. Strong communication skills and the ability to collaborate with stakeholders, provide guidance, and contribute to training and consulting efforts are essential.

Must be able to independently complete the essential function of evaluating all aspects of WCAG 2.1 AA compliance of web content and mobile apps, including visual and auditory inspection and physical interaction via keyboard, mouse, and touchscreen inputs.

• Basic foundation of knowledge and skills in technology and information systems obtained through an AA degree in computer science, information systems, educational technology, communications, or related fields, or similar certified coursework.
• At least one year of related work experience.
• Ability to work with HTML, CSS, and ARIA to evaluate and improve accessibility in web content and applications.
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively with diverse stakeholders.
• Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills to identify and resolve accessibility barriers.
• Ability to manage and track compliance data, reports, and accessibility audits across multiple digital properties.
• High level of attention to detail in evaluating accessibility compliance and ensuring accuracy in reports and recommendations.
• Commitment to digital accessibility and inclusive design to support equitable access for people with disabilities.
• Ability to review, assess, and recommend remediation strategies for accessibility issues in documents (PDFs, Word, PowerPoint) and multimedia content (audio, video).
• Knowledge of procurement and vendor assessment for accessibility compliance in enterprise technology solutions.
• Ability to engage with governance groups and stakeholders to implement accessibility improvements.
• Knowledge of learning management systems (e.g., Canvas) and content management systems (e.g., Drupal, Word Press) and their accessibility features and considerations.
• Ability to advocate for accessibility policies and best practices at an institutional level.

• Two or more years of professional experience conducting manual WCAG 2.1 AA evaluations of web content with assistive technologies, including screen readers (e.g., JAWS, NVDA, Voice Over) and evaluation of HTML and CSS code.
