About The Position The Programmer is responsible for creating, managing and improving production CNC machining centers, offline bend programming, and supporting offline robotic weld programming to meet manufacturing and engineering design requirements.

- Respectful and clear communication when working with operators, leads and management
- Presenting and communicating progress and improvements to individuals and groups
- Reporting to the manufacturing engineering manager progress
- Support engineers by providing crucial input on design
- Prepare SOPs for setup and operation for operators
- Load programs in CNC machines and provide instruction on setup
- Determine operation sequence, select and adjust tools, and proof tests programs for each planned part runoff
- Troubleshoot problematic set-ups and document changes
- Perform quality assurance tests to ensure products meet design specifications on new programs
- Develops programming for various CNC machines using Mastercam software and Mazatrol; determine proper feeds, speeds, and cutting tools; maximize efficiency of cutter paths
- Attend weekly true north board meetings and provide updates, request support and raise awareness
- Prepare work instructions for setup and recommend use of inserts, fixtures, and tooling for various operations
- Identify areas for improving the setup or program and implement improvements
- Collaborate with Engineering and Manufacturing to develop safe and efficient part programming and processes supporting lean manufacturing goals
- Manage programming-related files with Predator software and on the company network to maintain accuracy and security
- Ensure all CNC programs meet Astec’s quality requirements
- Write and create method sheets for machine shop, press brake, and robotic welding before operations start
- Monitor machining times and optimize regularly with new techniques and methods
- Maintain and update the CNC program database with revisions matching engineering drawings
- Work closely with machinists to prepare, optimize, and update programs
- May operate various machines to provide direction on setup and program optimization
- Set up, program, operate and troubleshoot CNC lathes and mills with minimal assistance
- Accurately use gauges and measuring instruments to ensure tolerance requirements
- Other responsibilities as needed to meet business needs
- Associate of Arts degree (A.A.) from a two-year college or technical school, or 5+ years related experience and/or training in machining center programming or operator roles; or equivalent combination of education and experience as deemed sufficient by management
- Minimum 5 years’ experience as a CNC Programmer in heavy equipment manufacturing; experience on a variety of CNC machines; experience on manual machines considered
- Minimum 5 years’ knowledge of and experience working with steel
- Ability to read and interpret G and M code programs (experience preferred)
- Mastercam experience desirable
- Mazatrol programming experience desirable
- Offline bend programming experience desirable
- Overhead and jib crane experience required
- Strong mathematical aptitude and ability to apply concepts such as fractions, micrometers, percentages, ratios and conversions
- Ability to read tape measures and machinist measuring tools, blueprints, and BOMs
- Commitment to lean principles and continuous improvement
- Ability to work well with diverse teams and maintain positive working relationships
- Strong accuracy and efficiency to meet production requirements
- Safe material handling skills for steel
- Capacity to learn quickly in a dynamic environment
- Flexible and adaptable under pressure and changing deadlines
