A Health Assistant provides individual student and school support work for Bethel School District. The primary purposes of the position are to provide basic first aid, follow direction and instruction from district registered nurse. and manage student health records. The position requires considerable contact with students, teachers, administrators, and parents. Tasks assigned require specific training regarding health issues and medication administration.
Other tasks require oral or written instructions on what is to be accomplished.
These duties are illustrative only. Other duties may be assigned.
- Compiles, establishes, updates, locates, communicates about and maintains student health records.
- Gathers and documents immunization records per state law and manages the annual report of immunization compliance to the state under nurse direction. Applies established state and district health policies, procedures and instructions.
- Assists school district nurse and school staff to provide first aid and basic health care to students.
- Performs delegated tasks per school nurse.
- Administers medication to students per district policy under the direction of the school district nurse.
- Assists the nurse with health screenings; organizes and conducts health screenings under direction of the nurse; communicates, follows up and records results of health screenings.
- Attends health team meetings and training.
- Ability to work harmoniously with students, parents, staff, nurses and administrators and to respect confidentiality.
- Ability to be flexible to meet the needs of students and health services program.
- Ability to work calmly in stressful situations.
- Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
- Ability to use telephone skills, communicating in a pleasant voice and relaying messages accurately.
- Knowledge of medical terminology, symbols and first aid procedures.
- Knowledge of office management principles and practices specific to health record management.
- Knowledge and skills in the use of office equipment, including computer skills.
- Knowledge of student database program medical module.
- Ability to maintain an appropriate and legal level of confidentiality regarding students, staff, and other individuals.
