Overview
Public Works Parks and Open Space Division are looking to hire! City of Eugene’s parks and open space system provides spaces to play, run, hike, bike, commute or simply relax in. The green spaces along Eugene’s transportation system include over 50,000 street trees, 200 medians, and 600 vegetated stormwater quality facilities which are part of and maintained by the Parks and Open Space Division.
The division is seeking an entry-level Park Specialist 1 to work outdoors, advance clean water initiatives, and reduce environmental impacts to the urban landscape while keeping green spaces safe, clean, and green.
The primary duties include routine landscape maintenance tasks and responsibility for landscaped medians and stormwater quality facilities throughout Eugene. Tasks include vegetation management, mowing, pruning, mulching, irrigation, litter and debris pick-up within safe work zones in the public right of way. The role requires the ability to perform strenuous manual work under varying weather conditions and a positive attitude with strong customer service, compassion, and dependability.
This is an entry-level position in a rewarding team environment.
- Perform routine landscape maintenance and maintain landscaped medians and stormwater facilities.
- Vegetation management, mowing, pruning, mulching, irrigation, litter and debris removal within safe work zones in the public right of way.
- Operate and service small and medium-sized equipment used in median and stormwater facility maintenance.
- Prune and maintain turf, assist with planting and transplanting perennials, shrubs, and trees, and monitor turf watering.
- Assist with repairs and maintenance of irrigation components (sprinklers, lateral pipes, valve boxes).
- Perform janitorial duties at park facilities (clean restrooms, wash facilities, arrange furniture).
- May lead the work of seasonal employees and volunteers at the work site.
- Emergency storm response duties as required, including operating equipment and responding to callbacks.
- Participate in the two-year cross-training program; rotations through operation crews within the Parks & Open Space Division; eligibility to flex to Park Specialist 2 after competency development.
- Support diversity, equity, and inclusion in the workplace and adhere to safety protocols and PPE requirements.
- Experience:
One year of professional, manual work in grounds keeping, parks and/or natural area maintenance, vegetated stormwater facility maintenance, and/or building maintenance. - License/Certification:
Valid Oregon driver’s license (or ability to obtain by date of hire); pass driving records check and maintain record. May require Oregon State Class A commercial driver's license within one year; valid Flagger Certification or ability to obtain within 6 months; may require additional technical certifications. - Background:

Ability to perform strenuous physical work outdoors in varied weather; ability to safely operate vehicles and equipment; strong communication and customer service skills; availability to respond to emergency callbacks; ability to work independently or as part of a crew; basic reading and maps/drawings skills.

Landscape and grounds maintenance principles, horticulture basics, safety, and diversity, equity, and inclusion considerations. - Abilities:
Perform manual maintenance duties, operate vehicles and equipment, plan and lead tasks, perform minor repairs, read maps and drawings, learn new tasks, work safely around the public, and communicate effectively with staff and the public. - Physical and technological demands:
Ability to perform outdoor work in all weather, wear PPE, and use computers and mobile devices to track information.
- Work Schedule:
Typically Monday–Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., with some seasonal schedule variations and occasional weekend shifts or emergency calls. Cross-team rotations may affect schedule. - Location:
