Duties

This position is with the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), within U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), Office of Facilities and Asset Management (OFAM), Mission Support Facilities (MSF) Division. The MSF Division provides facilities and associated infrastructure, facilities management, and sustainment to support CBP mission support office operations. As stewards of a large national portfolio of GSA‑owned and CBP‑owned infrastructure, MSF balances resources to ensure the right facilities are planned and delivered at the right time to meet mission requirements.

Typical work assignments include creating building designs and highly detailed drawings by hand and by using specialist computer‑aided design applications; liaising with construction professionals about the feasibility of potential projects; reviewing Business Partner requests for facility/building construction, alteration, and restoration; creating designs to meet client specifications, proposing budget and time estimations, and acting as an intermediary between the client and the architect team;

overseeing the preparation of conceptual drawings and diagrammatic sketches which translate facility requirements into plans, elevations, sections and details showing the design, location, and dimensions of the various elements of the structure.

Requirements

You must be a U.S. Citizen to apply for this position. Males born after 12/31/1959 must be registered with Selective Service. Primary U.S. residency for at least three of the last five years. All pre‑employment processes will be conducted in English. You may be required to pass a background investigation. CBP follows the DHS Drug‑Free Workplace Plan for drug testing procedures.

As a CBP employee, you will adhere to all government ethics standards and criminal conflict of interest statutes. Probationary period of one year applies to new federal employees. The position is a bargaining unit covered role, represented under the National Treasury Employees Unions (NTEU).

DHS uses E‑Verify to confirm eligibility of all newly hired employees to work in the United States.

Qualifications

Experience (GS‑13): One year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level, performing duties such as providing architectural services for design, layout, and construction of large structures; furnishing advice and decisions in preparation of studies, plans, and design criteria; evaluating and analyzing data, development concepts, and recommending solutions; planning and monitoring projects to ensure compliance, identifying project requirements.

Basic Requirements –

Education:

Degree in architecture or a related field that included 60 semester hours of coursework in architecture, with at least 30 semester hours in architectural design, and 6 semester hours each in structural technology, properties of materials and methods of construction, and environmental control systems.
OR a combination of education and experience:
College‑level education, training, and/or technical experience that furnishes a thorough knowledge of the arts and sciences underlying professional architecture, and a good understanding of the architectural principles, methods, and techniques and their applications to design and construction or improvement of buildings.

Experience: An applicant lacking a degree in architecture must have had one year of experience in an architect’s office or architectural work for each year short of graduation. In the absence of college courses, five years of such experience is required. Experience includes paid, unpaid, volunteer, and national service programs.
