Engineering Assistant I or II – Multiple Locations
Job Description – TxDOT Fort Worth District.
The TxDOT Fort Worth District is looking for two (2) motivated individuals to join our Engineering Assistant Program and begin building a meaningful career in transportation engineering. This program provides hands‑on experience in construction, roadway design, and maintenance, training, and support for the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) and Professional Engineering (PE) exams, and continued career development and professional growth.
Job SummaryPerform engineering work, gaining experience in design, construction inspection, maintenance, surveying, environmental and transportation operations. Assist in contract administration, emergencies, and training others. Work independently on assignments, with supervision for unusual issues.
Responsibilities- Actively prepare for professional engineering licensing/registration through appropriate training and exams.
- Apply engineering principles and methods to transportation‑related activities.
- Assist during emergencies and inclement weather.
- Assist with contract administration for construction and maintenance projects to ensure contractor compliance.
- Perform construction inspection and material sampling/testing.
- Perform engineering‑related planning, design, data collection, evaluation, and analysis activities.
- Perform research and problem solving of engineering‑related problems.
- Prepare and check plans, specifications, and estimates (PS&E) and designs.
- Perform other job responsibilities as assigned.
- Perform advanced and specialized engineering design work.
- Assist in training less experienced engineering assistants, specialists, and/or technicians.
- Review construction plans prepared by consultants.
- Minimum:
Bachelor’s degree in engineering or a related discipline. Master’s or doctoral degree may substitute. - No work experience required for Engineering Assistant I; 1 year of engineering‑related experience for Engineering Assistant II.
- Valid driver’s license (state vehicle driving required).
- Preferred:
Passed the FE exam.
- Knowledge of transportation engineering terminology and fundamentals.
- Understanding of transportation design engineering principles and practices.
- Familiarity with computer‑aided drafting and design systems.
- Ability to use engineering workstations and applications of engineering technology.
- Strong logical and analytical reasoning to define problems and draw conclusions.
- Ability to lead, assign, review, and monitor the work of others (Engineering Assistant II).
- Work inside and outside environmental conditions; extreme cold or heat may occur.
- Exposure to moving vehicles and mechanical parts; high places/heat; chemicals.
- Wearing protective gear (respirator, hard hat, etc.) required.
- Sedentary work with occasional lifting up to 10 lbs.
- Physical tasks such as stooping, standing, lifting, and walking.
- Must pass drug testing and comply with safety requirements.
- Requires work on weekends, holidays, and outside 8‑to‑5 hours.

Selected candidates may be assigned to Fort Worth, Euless, Keene, or Weatherford. Headquarters: 2501 Southwest Loop, Fort Worth, TX 76133. Other locations: UST‑Texas‑Euless.
SalaryEngineering Assistant I: B20, $5,462 (monthly). Engineering Assistant II: B21, $6,000 (monthly).
Program DevelopmentAll Engineering Assistants must participate in the Engineering Assistant Career Development Program (EACDP), which requires signing a Program Agreement outlining responsibilities and time commitment.
