Position: Recreation Leader - Outside the Box After School Program (Temporary/Part-time)

Overview

Do you love working with kids and the outdoors? Get outside the box at our unique after‑school program at the Sequoia Park Zoo. We are looking for new and experienced recreation leaders to connect with participants and make after‑school fun. Plan and lead activities, nature walks, games, and take part in special zoo encounters in the redwood forest at Outside the Box.

Ideal candidates have availability Monday‑Friday from 12 PM‑6 PM throughout the 2026‑2027 academic school year.

Responsibilities
  • Plan and lead youth activities, including after‑school programs, sports programs, community classes, camps, and special events.
  • Check fields, playgrounds, and facilities for safety hazards; secure fields, facilities, and lights after use.
  • Maintain supplies, plans, and equipment for activities.
  • Act as an information source to the public concerning recreational programs and activities.
  • Assist in compliance with relevant health and safety laws and guidelines.
  • Perform duties related to sports programming and scorekeeping.
  • Oversee operations during special events such as skate night events.
  • Assist in oversight of community volunteer events.
  • Perform related duties in support of recreational programs as assigned.
Qualifications and Experience
  • Knowledge Of: Working with youth in structured settings; field and facility layout standards and required equipment; planning of activities; basic safety policies and procedures; general filing, reporting, and record‑keeping.
  • Ability To: Meet the physical demands of prolonged physical activity; interact and communicate effectively with the public; adhere to department policies and procedures concerning safety, accidents, and inappropriate behavior; establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Any combination of training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
  • Work experience in recreation or sports programs; participation in similar programming through school or community programs; volunteer service in a related field; experience working with children is desirable.
  • Must successfully pass a DOJ background test if working with youth.
  • Must present a negative TB test if working with youth.
  • Obtain CPR and First Aid certification within two months of hire.
  • Valid California class C driver’s license may be required.
Physical Demands

Positions in this classification frequently involve bending, stooping, kneeling, reaching, climbing, walking on uneven surfaces, and pushing or pulling drawers. Employees must lift, carry, push, and pull materials and objects necessary to perform job functions.

Environmental Elements

Work occurs in a variety of indoor and outdoor settings with moderate to high noise levels, varying temperature conditions, and potential exposure to hazardous substances. Employees may be exposed to blood and body fluids, requiring First Aid and CPR, and must wear appropriate attire for the activity assigned. Interaction with upset staff or public may occur.

Working Conditions

Work may include various day, evening, and weekend shifts as assigned.

Certifications and Licenses

CPR and First Aid certification required within two months of hire. Valid California class C driver’s license may be required.

Health and Safety Requirements

Must pass a DOJ background test and present a negative TB test if working with youth.

Benefits

Paid Sick Leave:
Employees who work 30 or more days within a year are entitled to paid sick leave. Employees accrue at least one hour of paid leave for every 30 hours worked. Accrual begins on the first day of employment or July 1, 2015, whichever is later. Employees may use accrued paid sick days beginning on the 90th day of employment.
