Position Overview
The University of California, Agriculture and Natural Resources (UC ANR) invites applications for an Academic Coordinator II position at UC Cooperative Extension, Humboldt office, in Eureka, CA.
PurposeThe Academic Coordinator II will collaborate with UC ANR staff, the ANR Fire Network, and strategic partners to develop and deliver educational curricula that increase fire resiliency across a variety of stakeholders in California. The coordinator will also support science‑based outreach, pursue interdisciplinary collaborations, build relationships with project partners statewide, and teach program components.
Major Duties and Responsibilities- Coordinate statewide activities of the Fire Resilience and Workforce Development Program and the northern California region of the California Fire Science Consortium.
- Provide regional coordination for activities of the Humboldt County Prescribed Burn Association.
- Lead and contribute to effective communication efforts, including development and maintenance of websites, social media, blogs, and other media.
- Develop, adapt, implement, and evaluate program activities, training, curriculum, and other educational activities aligned with program goals and audience needs.
- Communicate science‑based research to diverse audiences.
- Collaborate with UC ANR academics, campus‑based specialists, and other stakeholders to address priority issues.
- Create a positive environment that supports the success of the team, motivating others, and keeping commitments.
- Participate in professional organizations and collaborate with federal, state, and county governmental agencies and NGOs.
- Represent UC ANR professionally, maintaining positive relationships with stakeholders and clientele.

The Academic Coordinator II reports to the Forestry Advisor of the UCCE Humboldt County and the Fire Network Director.
Qualifications RequiredEducation: A minimum of a master’s degree in natural resource management, fire, or a related area required at the time of appointment.
- Technical knowledge of fire science and management.
- Ability to communicate complex natural resource concepts to landowners, community members, and academics.
- Five years or more of professional experience in fire or forest management.
- Record of training or experience in fire and forest science or management.
- Experience developing curriculum, teaching fire science topics, designing research, and planning prescribed burns is prioritized. Preference given to candidates with operational fire qualifications such as NWCG FFT1, FIRB, and FEMO.
- Ability and means to travel on a flexible schedule, proof of liability and property damage insurance, valid California Driver’s License for university or county vehicles.
- Not a remote position; onsite work required. Flexible work arrangements may be approved by supervisors.
- Unrestricted and permanent work authorization in the United States.
- Demonstrated ability to prepare, deliver, and evaluate research, educational materials, and extension programming.
- Experience planning, coordinating, and conducting prescribed fire operations.
- Ability to develop and disseminate science‑based educational material, including presentations and in‑person activities.
- Proficiency in internet communications and computer software.
- Experience with specialized field sampling, data collection, and analysis.
- Excellent written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Ability to tailor communication to diverse audiences, including funders, partners, and stakeholders.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in teams, providing leadership for research and education activities.
- Ability to lead and instruct groups of varying skill levels in field operations of prescribed fire preparation and implementation.
- Self‑directed, responsible, and internally motivated, adapting to changing conditions.
