Election Specialist I/II
The Humboldt County Office of Elections is committed to ensuring all eligible residents have an opportunity to exercise their right to vote; conducting elections in a fair, accurate, and efficient manner; and providing reliable information and the best possible service to voters, districts, candidates, and other interested parties.
Responsibilities- Provides information to the public in person, on the phone, and in writing on matters such as voter registration, initiative and recall processes, election results, and Fair Political Practices Act requirements.
- Issues and receives nomination and election documents for candidates, explains relevant laws and regulations, reviews documents for compliance with state guidelines, and calculates and accepts filing fees.
- Distributes and receives voter registration forms, verifies addresses, and enters voter registration information into the computer system.
- Performs research and gathers information on election laws and regulations.
- Processes requests for absentee ballots and verifies addresses for undelivered ballots.
- Contacts and schedules election officers and precinct workers, mails informational materials, and answers questions related to election day activities.
- Participates in training and directs the work of precinct workers and other temporary staff.
- Inventories materials and supplies used during elections; assists in packing supply boxes for polling places.
- Assists in verifying accuracy of election equipment, trial ballots, and other election materials.
- Distributes voter registration materials to various community locations and participates in the voter outreach program.
- Performs a variety of office support work such as maintaining files, preparing letters, and data entry and retrieval.
- May make simple modifications to update maps used by the Elections Division.
- Must possess a valid California driver’s license.
- Must be willing to work overtime, including evenings, weekends, and holidays during active election periods.
- Two years of clerical or office support work, including at least one year of experience explaining rules and regulations to the public (Election Specialist I). Additional one year of experience processing election documents equivalent to the county’s class of Election Specialist I is required for Election Specialist II.
- Knowledge of office administrative practices and procedures, record‑keeping principles, basic business data processing, basic inventory control, business arithmetic, and some knowledge of California election laws, regulations, and procedures.
- Skills in reading, interpreting, and explaining regulations; organizing work, setting priorities, and making independent decisions; communicating effectively with people from a variety of backgrounds; accurate arithmetic calculations; organizing and maintaining accurate files; preparing clear and concise correspondence.
Typical schedule:
Monday – Friday, 9 AM to 5 PM. Evening, weekend, and holiday work hours are mandatory during active election periods.
