Under general supervision, performs rough and finish carpentry in the repair, maintenance, remodeling and occasional construction of wooden and concrete structures; and performs related work as assigned.
Distinguishing CharacteristicsThis is the skilled journey level classification in this building trade which performs the full range of carpentry duties on County buildings, facilities and structures. This class is distinguished from other maintenance and repair classes by the requirement for specialized, well developed skills in carpentry, rather than general facility maintenance.
Responsibilities- Participates in the design, layout and planning of office remodeling projects affecting County buildings and facilities; takes measurements; prepares working drawings and sketches; assists in preparing project specifications.
- Estimates materials, tools and equipment needed for work assignments; orders and picks up materials and supplies from outside vendors as appropriate; prepares cost estimates for job.
- Performs skilled carpentry work, including the preparation of concrete forms, and places and finishes concrete; frames platforms, walls, decks and partitions; installs and tapes sheetrock; installs finish material such as baseboards, trims and mouldings.
- Repairs and installs doors and door hardware; changes and keys locks; installs security hardware.
- Constructs and modifies cabinetry and office furnishings, including book cases, tables, and specialized furniture.
- Installs and repairs roofing materials; patches and makes emergency repairs to existing roofing.
- Assembles and installs moveable wall panels in offices; orders channels and wall panels to meet departmental needs.
- Maintains and services carpentry equipment and hand and power tools; keeps small inventory of frequently used supplies and hardware.
- Maintains basic records of work performed.
- May direct the work of less skilled assistants on specific projects; ensures that proper safety precautions are followed.
- Principles, methods, materials, tools and equipment used in rough and finish carpentry, cabinetry and wood finishing.
- Methods and materials used in concrete work including the preparation of forms and the finishing of concrete.
- Operation and maintenance of a variety of hand, power and shop tools used in the trade.
- Safe work methods and safety regulations pertaining to the work.
- Shop mathematics.
- Operating and maintaining specialized tools and equipment of the carpentry trade.
- Measuring and calculating angles, lengths and volumes.
- Designing, laying out and preparing sketches for carpentry and related construction jobs.
- Estimating necessary materials and equipment to complete assignments.
- Exercising independent judgment and initiative without close supervision.
- Preparing basic records and reports of work performed.
- Reading and interpreting manuals, specifications, drawings and blueprints.
- Understanding and following oral and written instructions.
- Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with those encountered in the course of the work.
- Must possess a valid California driver's license.
- Must possess sufficient strength and stamina to lift and carry objects weighing up to 100 pounds.
- Must be willing to respond to emergencies in off-hours as necessary.
Two years of skilled experience in the carpentry or cabinetry building trades.
LICENSESSome classifications require possession of valid professional and/or technical licenses. Some classifications may require the possession of a valid California driver’s license.
MEDICAL EXAMINATIONA pre-employment medical examination provided by the County may be required upon offer of employment.
OTHER EXAMINATIONSSome positions also require psychological evaluation and/or extensive background investigation.
PROBATIONARY PERIODPersons appointed to regular County positions serve a probationary period. This is normally six (6) months but could be up to one (1) year. All designated safety employees serve a one-year probationary period.
