Definition:

Extra Help Road Maintenance Worker I/II County of Humboldt Public Works The crews are responsible for inspecting and maintaining the roadways in their area. They are also responsible for roadside maintenance, such as brush cutting and tree trimming, and since they do not use chemicals, pesticides, or herbicides, ditches have to be maintained by hand or machine. They assess, repair or replace drainage systems such as ditches and culverts, as these are an integral component of road maintenance.

Job Highlights:

• Breaks and removes surfaces; digs, shovels, hauls and loads and unloads spoils, sands, asphalt mixes and other materials; operates jack hammers, pavement breakers, concrete saws, spaders, tampers and a wide variety of hand and power tools related to road maintenance work; shovels, rakes, rolls and irons asphalt and sprays oil; operates a variety of heavy trucks; sand seals surfaces; prepares for overlays;
  
  cleans up work sites upon completion of jobs.
• Installs, repairs and maintains culverts, ditches and drainage structures; excavates and clears roads and ditches.
• Performs traffic monitoring and control, including the distribution of barricades, warning signs, safety cones and/or the flagging of vehicles.
• Performs brush clearance, tree removal and weed control work.
• Operates a variety of light construction equipment such as dump trucks, backhoes, rollers, loaders, patch pots; may operate heavier equipment on a training basis.
• Performs snow removal and storm patrol work.
• Observes safe work methods and safety practices related to the work; cones and flags work sites to secure from traffic; uses appropriate safety equipment; observes safe driving practices.
• Inspects vehicles and performs minor maintenance; reports the need for major repairs and service; fuels and lubricates vehicles and related equipment; washes and cleans assigned vehicles.
• Operates and maintains a wide variety of hand and power tools and equipment related to work assignments.
• Maintains basic records of daily work performed.
• May train and direct the work of others; may act in a lead capacity on specific jobs. Responds to emergency situations in off hours as required.

Work Schedule:

• Summer hours:
  Mon. thru Thurs. 6:30AM to 5:00PM 1/2 hr lunch
• Winter hours:
  Mon. thru Friday 7:30AM to 4:00PM 1/2 hr lunch

Definition:

Under immediate (Road Maintenance Worker I) to general (Road Maintenance Worker II) supervision, performs unskilled to semi-skilled heavy, physical work in the maintenance, repair and construction of roads; operates a variety of vehicles, equipment and hand and power tools; and performs related duties as assigned.

Supervision Received and Exercised:

Receives immediate (Road Maintenance Worker I) to general (Road Maintenance Worker II) supervision from assigned supervisory or management personnel. Exercises no direct supervision over staff.

Class Characteristics:

Road Maintenance Worker I:
This is the entry-level classification in the Road Maintenance classification series. Initially under close supervision, incumbents learn and perform routine duties in road maintenance, repair and construction. As experience is gained, assignments become more varied, complex, and difficult; close supervision and frequent review of work lessen as an incumbent demonstrates skill to perform the work independently. Positions at this level usually perform most of the duties required of the positions at the II level, but are not expected to function at the same skill level and usually exercise less independent discretion and judgment in matters related to work procedures and methods.

Work is usually supervised while in progress and fits an established structure or pattern. Exceptions or changes in procedures are explained in detail as they arise.

Road Maintenance Worker II:
This is the journey-level classification in the Road Maintenance class series. Positions at this level are distinguished from the I level by the performance of the full range of duties as assigned, working independently, and exercising judgment and initiative. Positions at this level receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies of the work unit.

This class is distinguished from Road Maintenance Worker III in that the latter performs skilled operation of heavy construction equipment such as graders, low beds, dozers, gradalls and crusher equipment, and may lead the work of crews on a project basis.
