Nature of Work: The Day Camp Aide is responsible for directing a wide variety of recreation activities for the 10-week summer day camp program for up to 40 children, ages 5-11.
Essential Duties, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Employee possesses knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform all essential duties of the job safely and satisfactorily, including municipal governance, teamwork, problem-solving, relationship-building, customer service, detail orientation, technology/equipment proficiency, policy adherence, time management, result orientation, research and data analysis, decision-making, self-motivation, stewardship, integrity, and upholding EGD core values.
- Ability to listen, read, understand, and communicate the English language orally and in writing.
- Expectation to be punctual, have good attendance, and communicate effectively for scheduling conflicts or leave according to city policy.
- Protect health and safety (emotional and physical) of all campers.
- Assist in providing experiences that promote individual and group growth.
- Assist with planning, organizing, and directing a wide variety of recreation programs, field trips, and special events.
- Support activities such as crafts, science projects, games, and reading.
- Collaborate with Director and camp staff to create an effective discipline plan for campers and monitor camper behavior daily.
- Supervise the issuance, use, care, and maintenance of recreation supplies and equipment.
- Follow assigned work schedule and camp schedule.
- Supervise participants on all bus trips, at the swimming pool, and during special events.
- Actively participate in camp activities, including regular interaction with staff and campers.
- Review and understand camp policies and procedures.
- Report to the Recreation Supervisor-Programs and Seniors as needed regarding programs, activities, special events, supplies, or equipment in need of repair.
- Understand development needs of youth, observe camp behavior, assess appropriateness, enforce safety regulations and emergency procedures, and apply behavior-management techniques.
- Skill in appropriately supervising and directing school-aged children in an unstructured setting.
- As a member of the City of Evans team, employees may perform additional duties as assigned.
Education, Experience, and Licensure:
Required:
- Must be 16 years of age or older; equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.
- Ability to accept supervision and guidance.
- Must possess integrity, adaptability, enthusiasm, patience, thoughtfulness, and self-control.
- Must set a good example for campers and others, including cleanliness, personal responsibility, punctuality, sportsmanship, and positive "can do" attitude.
- Must demonstrate ability to work with children and meet the following qualifications:
- Complete the Department-approved course in injury prevention.
- Complete the Department-approved course in playground safety for School-Aged Child Care Centers.
- Must have current CPR/First Aid/Universal Precautions Certification and Medication Administration Training prior to start date.
Preferred:
- Previous experience working with children, ideally in a camp setting.
- Bilingual in English and Spanish.
- Experience in public/municipal sector.
Physical and Working Environment:
The physical demands here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of the job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand for long periods of time, sit, walk, squat, talk, hear, and see. The employee is required to perform lifting 25 pounds. Employee is required to work indoors and occasionally outdoors in all weather conditions, and may be exposed to extreme heat, extreme cold, loud noise, toxic materials, and vibration.
