Nature of WorkThe Chief Building Official is under general direction and manages the day-to-day administration of the Building Division within the Economic Development Department; provides management and oversight to all building-related processes within the Department, performs permit processing, plan reviews, inspections, code development/adoption, code interpretations, and issuance of certificates of occupancy; collaborates with other city departments and external customers; and provides highly responsible and complex administrative support to the Economic Development Director.

- Manage the review process for a variety of residential and commercial permits and plans for compliance with adopted building codes and standards.
- Perform residential and commercial plan reviews.
- Conduct field inspections of residential and commercial projects.
- Participate in the land development process as needed.
- Advise, consult, and provide information to the Economic Development Director regarding compliance and enforcement of building codes and property maintenance codes.
- Compile statistical information, create reports, and enter database information.
- Consult with internal and external stakeholders on building code related issues; recommend code amendments; and offer solutions to technical problems and code enforcement actions.
- Present code adoption and amendments to City Council.
- Make final decisions on code interpretations.
- Provide assistance to various City advisory boards and commissions.
- Interpret and explain building codes and regulations.
- Provide advice in the development of short- and long-term plans; gather, interpret, and prepare data for studies, reports, and recommendations.
- Conduct inspections of buildings and structures that may be structurally compromised; proceed through enforcement actions by issuing notices to vacate premises as necessary; monitor compliance cases.
- Respond to building code violation complaints, conduct inspections, proceed through enforcement actions, monitor compliance cases; issue citations for noncompliance; assist in prosecution of violators.
- Recommend and implement changes to policies and codes.
- Expert knowledge of construction disciplines, codes, and standards.
