NATURE OF WORK: The Public Works and Maintenance Technician-Water I.II.III is under general supervision and performs a wide variety of semi-skilled and skilled work in operation, maintenance, and repair of the City's water system.
Positions in this class are flexibly staffed and are normally filled by advancement from level I or, when filled from the outside, require previous and directly related experience.
Public Works Maintenance Technician-Water I: The Public Works Maintenance Technician-Water I is under general supervision; this is the entry-level class in the Public Works Maintenance Technician-Water series. Employees are not required to have directly related work experience. Employees assigned to this class are expected to perform a wide variety of tasks related to the maintenance, repair and construction of water, stormwater, and street infrastructure.
Work is observed and reviewed both during performance and upon completion. Once trained in specific tasks, employees are expected to work with limited supervision.
Public Works Maintenance Technician-Water II: The Public Works Maintenance Technician-Water II is under general supervision; this is the mid-level class in the Public Works Maintenance Technician-Water series. Employees assigned to this class are expected to perform a wide variety of skilled and technical assignments related to the maintenance, repair and construction of water, stormwater, and street infrastructure . Positions at this level may oversee moderate projects.
Must be willing to train less experienced technicians. They will also lead other Technician I's in the field if and when directed by the supervisor.
Public Works Maintenance Technician-Water III: The Public Works Maintenance Technician-Water III is under general supervision; this is the most advanced class in the Public Works Maintenance Technician-Water series. Employees assigned to this class are expected to perform a wide variety of skilled and technical assignments related to the maintenance, repair and construction of water, stormwater, and street infrastructure with minimal instruction.
Positions at this level will oversee moderate to complex projects. Employees will train less experienced technicians. They will also lead other Technician I's and II's in the field if and when directed by the supervisor.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Public Works Maintenance Technician-Water I:
- Employee possesses the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform all the essential duties of the job safely and satisfactorily, including, but not limited to municipal governance, teamwork, problem-solving, relationship-building, customer service, detail oriented, technology/equipment proficiency, policy adherence, time management, result-orientation, research and analyzing data, decision-making, self-motivation, stewardship, integrity, and upholding our EDGE core values.
- Ability to listen to, read, understand, and communicate the English language both orally and in writing so others can understand, such as correspondence, report writing, and emails.

- Able and willing to learn job related skills and regulations.
- May perform temporary traffic control, including maintenance of traffic control devices and street signage, flagging, and directing traffic at work sites and controlling related safety functions at job sites
- Performs water pipeline maintenance; assists in the installation, repair, and replacement of service and main lines. Repair, replacement and exercising and maintenance of water valves and fire hydrants. Responds to water main and water service line breaks and leaks, performs necessary repairs to water lines and restores service.
- May read water meters and records consumption. Identify addresses for new meters. Identifies and addresses water meter equipment problems; activates and deactivates meters. Inventories meter equipment; performs meter maintenance. Performs meter and radio installations and change-outs and shut-offs as required.
- Performs general maintenance to include rough carpentry, pipe fitting, installation and repair of fence and guardrails, painting, plumbing and basic electrical work and more.
- May assist in building and removing concrete and wood forms; assists in mixing, setting, troweling, and finishing concrete and cement.
