NATURE OF WORKUnder the direction of the Fire Department Command Staff and/or designee, this position is primarily responsible for assisting in the development, delivery, and evaluation of the entire Lakefront operations before, during, and after the season.
Key Responsibilities- Primarily responsible for the supervision and administration of the Dempster St. Launch Facility operation, including the storage racks and launch passes.
- Primarily responsible for managing lifeguard work schedules and preparing bi‑weekly payroll for Lakefront staff.
- Enforces rules pertaining to the overall health and safety of the residents.
- Respond to emergency situations on the water promptly and appropriately. Reports any unsafe conditions to their direct supervisor.
- Attends trainings and conferences to enhance personal development and gain more knowledge, if applicable and approved.
- Attends department=>' and other meetings as required.
- Assists in recruiting, interviewing, recommending, training, supervising, and evaluating staff and volunteers.
- Assists in collecting and verifying the accuracy and completeness of hire paperwork for seasonal Lakefront staff.
- Assists in directing and coordinating daily activities of staff involved in the delivery of Lakefront operations, city services and programs.
- Assists in preparing and/or obtaining contractual agreements from outside service providers.
- Assists Parks and Recreation staff as needed toward department objectives and goals.
- Answers questions from 311, customer phone calls, emails, questions, comments, and concerns.
- Assists with developing, executing, implementing, and adhering to annual budget, strategic and operational plan for the department.
- Assists with preparing specifications for new equipment and material and to recommend items for purchase.
- May assist with other Lakefront operations/programs as necessary.
- Must possess a high school diploma, GED, or higher and must possess two (2) or more years of work experience in aquatic recreation.
- Must possess one (1) or more full seasons previous work as an Evanston Lifeguard Supervisor.
- Prior work experience in an open water aquatic facility preferred portrayal.
- Must possess or be willing to obtain a valid lifeguard certification, from a nationally recognized institution, and must maintain it as a condition of employment.
- Must be able to obtain CPR/AED/First Aid and lifeguarding instructor certifications, from a nationally recognized institution, and maintain them as a condition of employment.
- Must possess a valid driver’s license and a safe driving record.
- Must possess a deep understanding of boating safety regulations and emergency procedures.

Skills and Abilities
- Ability to work during busiest operational times, which will include evenings, weekends, and holidays.
- Ability to work overtime hours, if necessary, to support the Lakefront operations.
- Thorough knowledge of lakefront operations and general recreational programming.
- Ability to apply principles of rational systems to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists; to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagrammatic, or schedule form.
- Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide all units of measure; to perform the four operations with like or common decimal fractions; to compute ratio, rate, and percent; to draw and interpret bar graphs; to perform arithmetic operations involving all American monetary units.
- Ability to perform budget analysis for trends and expenditure predictions.
- Ability to read manuals (safety, instructional, etc.), professional and technical journals, financial reports, legal documents, newspapers, and encyclopedias.
