This is semi-skilled work performing installation, maintenance and repair on the water distribution system, meters and appurtenances and the sewer system. Work may involve serving as lead worker on a crew, detecting and repairing line leaks, and performing maintenance on other water/sewer system facilities. Work may also involve the operation of heavy equipment and other necessary tools needed to repair and replace underground lines and equipment.
Employees may be assigned tasks of a similar or higher level classification to gain experience and training in preparation for advancement. Safety equipment such as hardhat, safety glasses, reflective vest, gloves, steel-toed shoes and other protective equipment is worn.
- Installs, repairs, replaces, inspects and maintains the potable water system including water supply lines, water service lines, water mains, hydrants, valves and all appurtenances using hand and power tools.
- Installs, repairs, replaces, inspects and maintains meters and meter reading devices.
- Installs, repairs, replaces, inspects and maintains the municipal sewer conveyance system including pipelines, manholes, drainage structures and all appurtenances using hand and power tools.
- Notifies customers of temporary emergency shut-offs of water supply for repair; provides emergency water supply connection to customers.
- Utilizes both paper and computer-based records and maps to access information on the sewer and water system. Maintains, field verifies, and updates records for both sewer and water system as needed.
- Performs semi-skilled work in excavation of streets, alleys, curbs, and sidewalks, including back-fill and temporary patching. Compacts backfilled excavation using air, gasoline and hydraulic tampers.
- Operates and maintains a variety of tools and equipment such as backhoe, sewer-cleaning equipment including power rodder, high velocity water jet and catch basin cleaning equipment, Closed Circuit Television system for mainline sewer inspection, hydraulic and air operated valve-turning equipment, trucks, and power and hand tools.
- Drives various trucks to transport crew, materials, equipment and spoils. Loads and unloads trucks as appropriate to work assignment.
- Plows snow and spreads salt on City streets, parking lots and sidewalks.
- Measures distances of excavation sites using tape measure, and marks outline of areas to be trenched according to direction of supervisor.
- Works in conjunction with pipeline/ catch basin cleaning company by performing as an inspector/ recorder and assists in cleaning.
- Communicates with supervisor and other workers using mobile telephone.
- Cleans and maintains City property and facilities.
- May participate in the collection or shutting off of delinquent accounts, locating customer services, shut off water service for customer related problems, reading meters, taking final readings and collecting water samples for analysis.
- Performs utility locations.
- Implements department-standard safety procedures, including but not limited to, proper traffic control, barricading, trenching and shoring, and confined space entry procedures.
- May assist with work of other divisions.
- Will be required to work occasional overtime (both evenings and weekends) for after-hours duty, scheduled maintenance and non-scheduled emergency work.
- Must posses a high school diploma or GED and two years of related experience in general water or sewer work, or any equivalent
- Must posses a valid Class B Commercial Driver’s License with air brakes endorsement (or higher) and a clean driving record
- Must be willing to obtain a Flagger Certification in accordance with IDOT requirements, OSHA Confined Space, OSHA Excavation Standard – Competent Person within eighteen (18) months of hire
- Must be willing and able to obtain a National Incident Management System (NIMS) IC S 100, 200, 700, & 800 Certification within 18 months of employment and maintain it as a condition of employment.
