This is a senior, lead level position performing, assigning, and monitoring work. Work involves leading a crew and participating in installing, maintaining, and repairing the municipal sewer conveyance system. Work includes the operation of heavy equipment and necessary tools to repair and replace all aspects of the municipal sewer conveyance system. Employees may be assigned tasks of a similar or higher-level classification to gain experience and training in preparation for advancement.
Safety equipment such as hardhat, safety glasses, reflective vest, gloves, steel-toed shoes, and other protective equipment are worn. Work may also involve substituting for a first line supervisor during periods of absence.
- Leads the work of a crew in construction activities and directs them in the use of machines, work methods, and safety procedures.
- Operates and maintains a variety of tools and equipment including, but not limited to, backhoe, trucks, crane truck, forklift, power tools, hand tools, etc. Services, adjusts, and makes minor repairs to equipment; compacts backfilled excavation using air, gasoline and hydraulic tampers.
- Operates sewer cleaning equipment including, but not limited to, power rodder, high velocity water jetting, and catch basin cleaning equipment.
- Leads the work of a crew to perform skilled construction work in the excavation of streets, alleys, parkways, curbs, and sidewalks, including back-fill and temporary patching or final restoration.
- Leads the work of a crew to install sewer mains to appropriate grade; makes point repairs on sewer mains which are in service.
- Leads the work of a crew to install, repair and maintain the City’s sewer conveyance system including pipelines, manholes and catch basins using all proper trenching and shoring equipment and confined space procedures as required.
- Leads the work of a crew to install precast concrete sections and adjustment rings to raise manhole structures to prescribed street level using masonry tools.
- Leads the work of a crew to clean and repair catch basins, inlets, and manholes, using hand and power tools.
- Leads the work of a crew to break asphalt and other pavement using hydraulic pavement breaker, air hammer, pick and shovel, using proper traffic control.
- Inspects manholes to determine condition and locate stoppage.
- Cuts sections of pipe with a cut-off saw to make the needed line repairs; replaces broken pipe sections and reconnects pipe sections, using pipe sleeves; inspects joints to ensure tightness and seal before back filling.
- Measures distance of excavation sites, using tape measure, and marks outline of area to be trenched according to direction of supervisor.
- Services, adjusts, and makes minor repairs to equipment, machines, and attachments.
- Provides information and prepares records showing manpower, equipment utilization, and disposition of materials.
- Communicates with supervisor and other workers using radio and telephone.
- May assist other divisions within the Public Works Agency as needed.
- Provides information to update sewer atlas maps.
- Plows snow and spreads salt on City streets.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Must possess a high school diploma or GED and must possess five (5) or more years of work experience with a water or sewer utility or other public utilities and/or heavy construction.
- Must possess a valid Class A Commercial Driver’s License or a Class B Commercial Driver’s License with air brakes endorsement and a safe driving record.
- Must be willing and able to obtain a Confined Space Entry Certification within 18 months of employment and maintain it as a condition of employment.
- Must be willing and able to obtain a Trenching and Shoring Certification within 18 months of employment and maintain it as a condition of employment.
- Must be willing and able to obtain an IDOT Flagger Certification within 18 months of employment and must maintain it as a condition of employment.
- Must be willing and able to obtain National Incident Management System (NIMS) 100, 200, 700 & 800 certification within 18 months of employment.
