About BMAF:
Black Mesa Advanced Fission specializes in research and development of Fission Generators (otherwise known as Expeditionary/Tactically Mobile Microreactors). BMAF is under contract to the U.S. Army to develop and test a prototype of a small‑scale, ruggedized and mobile, sub‑100kWe electrical generator using nuclear energy technology (nano reactor).
Position Overview:This position offers hands‑on experience leading experienced professionals on real‑world engineering projects. This position will manage ongoing initiatives, direct technical and analytical analysis, supervise the mechanical engineering team, and develop a collaborative work environment between peers and direct reports. This position will have a major impact in managing technical development and driving project milestone timelines to completion.
Key Responsibilities:- Lead teams conducting design, fabrication, analysis, and testing of systems and components
- Integrate mechanical and electro‑mechanical assemblies
- Independently manage projects as directed by the CTO
- Review and create standards for technical drawings, component and assembly models, reports, and documentation
- Organize resources from additional teams to complete mechanical and electro‑mechanical designs
- Supervise iterative manufacturing and lead design reviews
- Specify, collect and analyze data for robust design considerations, product refinement, and process improvement
- Utilize engineering tools (CAD, CFD, structural analysis, CAM, rapid prototyping, and project management tools) to ensure designs meet requirements
- Collaborate with cross‑functional teams to support product and process development
- Actively manage and participate in cross‑functional design and manufacturing functions
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s (+10 yr experience) or Master’s (+8 yr experience) degree in Mechanical Engineering
- Previous large team leadership with experience managing concurrent projects
- Strong analytical, problem‑solving, and communication (verbal and written) skills
- Proficient in engineering software/tools (e.g., AutoCAD, Inventor, Nastran, MATLAB, Python, Excel, etc.), machining tools (e.g. Autodesk, Feature CAM, etc.), and modelling/simulation software (Flownex, etc.)
- Practical engineer (e.g. experience with welding, manual machining, CNC machining (milling and turning), 3D‑printing (plastic and metal), programming, etc.)
- Demonstrated ability to teach and lead mechanical and electro‑mechanical assemblies, documentation controls, and tolerance stackup analysis allowing for thermal expansion compensation
- Proven ability to lead design for manufacturing (DFM) to refine designs for the consideration of best value proposition to manufacture components, electronics, and equipment
Pay based on experience ($120k to $150k DOE)
