The special education teacher is responsible for planning and implementing goals of the students Individual Education Program (IEP).
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Follows legal requirements as dictated by state and federal statutes.
- Instructs individuals and groups in special education skill areas.
- Plans curriculum, lessons, and special education programs and teaching methods.
- Evaluates and monitors student progress.
- Maintains physical environment of the classroom.
- Prepares report cards, educational records, classroom observation records, and other forms.
- Maintains communication system with parents/caregivers of classroom students.
- Plans individual educational programs designed to meet student's needs and conform to state and federal laws.
- Assumes responsibility for the development and implementation of specific objectives to meet the needs of each individual student.
Skills and Abilities
- The ability to interact with public and other staff is required.
- Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory to instructional program.
- Ability to plan and implement lessons based on division and school objectives and the needs and abilities of students to whom assigned.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, peers, parents, and community.
- Ability to speak clearly and concisely in written or oral communication.
Supervises students and special education assistants for instruction purposes.
Qualifications- Education:
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university. - Certifications:
Valid teaching certificate with appropriate special education endorsement. - Language
Skills:
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations;
Ability to write routine reports and correspondence;
Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of administrators, managers, employees, clients, customers, and/or the general public. - Mathematical
Skills:
Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations;
Ability to apply financial concepts and statistical inferences. - Reasoning Ability:
Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form;
Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions;
Ability to use available information and develop long-term and short-term goals and objectives.
- Regularly required to stand, walk, talk, see, and hear.
- Required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
- Occasionally required to sit and reach with hands and arms.
- Occasionally lift 40 pounds or more individually and/or push/pull up to 100 pounds.
- Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and the ability to adjust focus.
- Noise level in the environment is variable depending upon the activities in the environment.
- Employee must constantly work to meet deadlines.
- Risk of exposure to infection and confrontational behaviors may be higher for certain special education positions.
Salary commensurate with level of education and experience.
Range:
Career Path I: $47,000 - $66,500;
Career Path II: $48,500 - $90,500.
