Job Summary

This position serves as EMT for the Evansville Fire and EMS Department, responsible for performing duties associated with providing emergency medical care to the sick and injured in accordance with all applicable laws, regulations, and Evansville Fire and EMS Department policies, procedures, and protocols.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Performs a wide variety of duties in accordance with standardized operating procedures of the Department, making independent decisions and taking authoritative action in response to situational demands. Errors in decision making or work are generally prevented through procedural safeguards, and undetected errors could result in substantial loss of property and possible injury and / or loss of life to self, co-workers, and members of the public.
  • Works with flexible schedule of duties and responds to emergencies for the purpose of emergency medical triage, treatment, and transportation to appropriate facilities.
  • Determines priorities with supervisor to decide how to effectively service the needs of the public, and work is reviewed through direct observation by a supervisor for compliance with Departmental practices and procedures.
  • Maintains frequent communication with Fire and EMS Department superiors and co-workers, law enforcement agencies, utility companies, emergency medical services, and the public for the purpose of responding to emergencies for preventing loss of lives and property.
  • Possess and apply knowledge and skills necessary to perform the duties of an Emergency Medical Technician, in a dignified and compassionate manner.
  • Responds to emergency calls, providing basic life support treatment to patients, as well as transportation to appropriate medical facilities.
  • Administering basic life support to patients at the scene, in route to the hospital, and in a pre-hospital setting, in accordance with federal, state, and local laws, regulations, and standards, and in accordance with policies, procedures, and protocols.
  • Assessing the nature and extent of injury or illness to establish and prioritize medical procedures to be followed.
  • Effectively communicating with professional medical personnel and treatment facilities to obtain instructions regarding further treatment and/or to arrange reception of patients to the appropriate center.
  • Maintaining order at scenes, including crowd disbursement and restraint of family and friends.
  • Completing patient care forms, insurance forms, evaluation forms, and all other forms in a competent and timely fashion.
  • Ensures appropriate vehicle maintenance is performed.
  • Attend continuing education for certification.
  • Abides by, enforces and participates in the implementation and ongoing oversight of safety standards and regulations
  • Maintains personal protective equipment and office equipment, ensuring proper working order.
  • Performs a variety of office duties including preparing and filing a variety of reports and paperwork, as required.
  • Responds to emergencies, rides on or drives vehicle to emergencies.
  • Maintains communication by radio and in person with all emergency personnel on scene.
  • Supervises personnel during overall incident operations and monitors for recurrence or hazards.
  • Prepares and submits a variety of required reports.
  • Receives and reviews records and reports from subordinates.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.
Requirements
  • Ability to be certified as Indiana EMT and CPR and maintain said certifications.
  • Ability to be certified as Hazmat Awareness Level, per OSHA 29 CFR .
  • Ability to effectively complete the required training as mandated by the State and Department.
  • Thorough knowledge of the principles and techniques of emergency care, including diagnosis, proper treatment, automobile extraction and transportation.
  • Knowledge of and ability to properly use all required equipment, including personal protective equipment, and medical equipment.
  • Knowledge of standard English grammar, spelling, and punctuation with ability to prepare written reports.
