Evansville State Hospital is one of the Indiana State Psychiatric Hospitals committed to the mission of Hope and Recovery. Located on 88 acres on the east side of Evansville, Ind., our facility provides medical treatment for chronic mental illness and substance abuse disorders with a dedicated team of psychiatrists and advanced practice professionals. Active Treatment helps our patients achieve their goals towards living in the most non-restrictive environment possible.

Our team assists patients in the treatment process, involving medical staff, nursing, psychology, social work, rehabilitation therapy, and community integration programs. Evansville State Hospital maintains accreditation through The Joint Commission as an Inpatient Psychiatric Hospital and CMS certification as a Psychiatric Medicare/Medicaid Hospital.

Salary Statement

The salary for this position typically starts at $41,210.00 but may be adjusted based on education or experience.

A Day in the Life:

The essential functions of this role include:

Ensuring resident security and maintaining order, including restraining unruly or dangerous residents when necessary.

Escorting residents to and from activity and therapy areas within and outside the building for medical, dental, or legal needs, ensuring security.

Assisting in implementing residents' treatment plans.

Monitoring residents during meals, activities, and in common areas.

Observing, reporting, and recording residents' condition and behavior.

Applying therapeutic interventions, including de-escalation, redirection, and approved behavior management techniques.

Helping residents with cleaning and caring for their living areas, clothing, and supplies.

Securing doors, searching visitors, operating communication systems, issuing keys, and escorting visitors.

Searching residents' rooms for contraband and ensuring safety.

Providing motivational support, counseling, teaching, and demonstrating daily living skills per treatment plans.

Assessing clients' training needs and facilitating transitional living skills.

Advising clients on social behavior.

Creating a safe, conducive learning environment that promotes self-esteem and independence.

Coordinating client activities under professional guidance and adapting treatment plans as needed.

Developing community living skills through activities like shopping, using public transportation, and locating community resources.

Managing clients' money and distributing it appropriately to meet treatment goals.

Supporting occupational and recreational therapy programs.

Performing clerical duties such as scheduling, ordering supplies, and documentation.

Obtaining and administering medications under RN supervision and documenting accordingly.

Assisting in managing aggressive behaviors.

Performing basic first aid, including antiseptic application, bandaging, CPR, and Heimlich maneuver as needed.

Attending work as scheduled is essential.

Qualifications:

The ideal candidate will minimally have:

A High School Diploma or HSE diploma.
At least 1+ years of relevant experience applying knowledge, skills, and abilities outlined below.

Relevant certifications and coursework may be considered.

Certified or willing to become certified in CPR/AED.
Knowledge of psychiatric nursing care, including medication administration.
Ability to accurately complete reports and documentation.
Effective response skills in emergencies.
Knowledge of behavior modification, self-defense, and restraint techniques.
Understanding of resident behavior and ability to anticipate and respond to changes.
Knowledge of institutional procedures.
Ability to assist with housekeeping and daily living activities.
Knowledge of therapeutic rehabilitation principles and methods.
Understanding of mental health needs specific to client groups.
Teaching skills such as motivation, assessment, charting, and behavior modification.
Ability to operate routine medical equipment.
Timely and accurate documentation skills.
Legal ability to operate a motor vehicle in Indiana.
Ability to manage and distribute client trust accounts.
Recognition of behaviors requiring intervention.
Knowledge of mental health service systems.
Ability to perform essential functions with or without accommodations.
