Position Summary

Under the direction of the assistant director or director, the Sergeant will supervise activities of the Public Safety Department on one of three shifts, coordinate shift scheduling for regular, part‑time, and student officers, and perform all duties required of a public safety officer as needed.

Responsibilities
  • Perform all duties assigned by the assistant director or director.
  • Supervise, coordinate, and participate in public safety, security, traffic, parking, and criminal offense operations, communicating relevant information regularly to officers.
  • Assist with investigations of personal injury accidents, auto accidents, property loss and damage, disturbances, and other violations on university property.
  • Ensure the efficiency, discipline, appearance, and conduct of security personnel under supervision.
  • Interpret University regulations, particularly the Student Code of Conduct, and explain these policies to subordinates, faculty, staff, and visitors.
  • Instruct subordinates on proper duty performance, especially for those in probationary periods.
  • Enforce rules and regulations and protect life and property in all public safety duties.
  • Assess the performance of personnel through observation and field presence, ensuring duties are performed promptly and efficiently.
  • Report in writing to the Director any misconduct or procedural violations by supervised personnel, initiating corrective actions when necessary.
  • Review incident and accident reports, supervising assignments and follow‑ups, and ensuring investigations are complete.
  • Assist in preparing annual performance evaluations for Public Safety Officers.
  • Advise the lieutenant, assistant director, or director on staffing or situational needs.
  • Attend professional development courses and in‑service training, including required FEMA and NIMS courses.
  • Assist with scheduling and training of new public safety personnel.
  • Provide information at orientation fairs and other university events.
  • Maintain appropriate dress and appearance while on duty, setting a good example for subordinates.
  • Perform dispatch duties when required.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
Required Knowledge and Skills
  • Associate degree in Law Enforcement, Protective Services, or related field OR equivalent combination of four years education and/or work experience in campus security, law enforcement, military, or a related field.
  • Supervisory experience or supervisory training.
  • Valid Indiana State Driver's License with acceptable driving record as defined by the University’s Vehicle Safety Policy ((Use the "Apply for this Job" box below).).
  • Capacity to maintain confidentiality of department reports.
  • Excellent listening, oral, and written communication skills; ability to handle difficult situations with calm and fact‑based language.
  • Ability to deal swiftly, rationally, and decisively with potentially unruly individuals in precarious situations.
  • Essential employee status with 24/7 duty assignment and responsiveness from off‑duty status.
  • Certification requirements within one year of hire:
    • Health Care Provider CPR, AED, Standard First Aid
    • Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) / First Responder
    • National Incident Management System (NIMS)
    • Complete FEMA Courses
    • Hazardous Materials for 1st Responders
    • Technical Rescue Awareness for 1st Responders
    • Hazmat Awareness
    • Critical Incident Training (CIT)
    • Other certifications/recertifications or specializations as assigned or required
  • Must also meet all qualifications and functional requirements of the Public Safety Officer position.
Preferred Knowledge and Skills
  • Experience with university and unit procedures.
Functional Requirements
  • Independent physical access to the university campus in various weather conditions.
  • Frequent driving or riding in a vehicle, sometimes for extended periods.
  • Use of sensory abilities (hearing, seeing, smelling) to assess emergency situations independently.
