Job Description

Thermoforming Maintenance Apprentice

You're an innovative thinker, passionate about the planet and eager to play a role in creating sustainable packaging that keeps the world healthy, fed and working. As part of our world‑class, performance‑focused team you'll support the efficient operation of thermoforming equipment by assisting in the inspection, maintenance, and repair of machinery under the guidance of experienced technicians. This role is designed to develop technical skills and knowledge in mechanical, electrical, and pneumatic systems specific to thermoforming processes.

The apprentice will learn to troubleshoot equipment issues, perform preventive maintenance, and ensure compliance with safety and quality standards. Through hands‑on training and mentorship, the apprentice will contribute to minimizing downtime and enhancing production reliability while progressing toward becoming a fully qualified maintenance technician.

Key Job Accountabilities

As part of the Thermoforming Maintenance Team, you'll be responsible for…

  • Inspect and repair pneumatic, hydraulic, electronic, electrical, and mechanical systems on thermoforming equipment.
  • Perform preventive maintenance procedures as specified in the QSI system.
  • Complete work assigned by Group Leader or Asst. Group Leader.
  • Communicate activities with Group Leader and other members of department.
  • Maintain neat and orderly appearance of the shop and printing equipment.
  • Obtain parts in emergency cases.
  • Assist in other departments as requested by Group Leader or Asst. Group Leader.
  • Seek training to stay current with job requirements.
  • Assume control of machine when a situation arises which has potential for personal injury or rapid deterioration of machine.
Qualifications/Requirements Education
  • High school diploma / GED equivalent.
  • Willingness to complete an apprenticeship program.
Practical
  • Relevant past work experience.
  • Able to accept responsibility for work performed.
  • Able to work independently and with others.
  • Able to work independently in a potentially isolated area of the building.
  • Knowledge on mechanical systems.
  • Basic trouble shooting skills.
  • Must be self‑motivated and self‑disciplined abiding by all Berry Plastics codes of ethics, safety polices and rules.
  • Verbal communication adequate to use a radio and or paging system to contact other co‑workers in other areas of the complex.
  • Ability to safely use a forklift independently and maintain all applicable training requirements for use in high traffic, low clearance areas while not posing a safety risk to others.
Physical Expectations
  • Hearing sufficient to recognize and respond to shouted warnings, alarms and horns on forklifts.
  • Stereo optical vision of 20/40 or better and peripheral vision of 70 degrees or greater and ability to read 10‑12‑point font at a distance of 12‑18 inches.
  • Able to see and identify colors. (Complete an "Ishiharar" color Vision Test)
  • Able to stand/walk for 11 hours of a 12‑hour shift.
  • Able to use both hands for effective manipulation of tools/parts.
