What You'll Do- Operate shop tools and equipment with proficiency.
- Perform routine and preventive maintenance and repair on all electric, diesel, and gasoline powered trucks and equipment.
- Set up and operate gas torch or arc welding equipment to weld primarily metal components according to work orders, layouts, diagrams, welding procedures, or oral instructions.
- Determine set up for work by applying knowledge of metal properties, fabrication requirements, shop mathematics, and welding and cutting techniques, materials, and equipment.
- Weld flat, cylindrical, or irregular parts and linear, radial, or circular joints; sets current, voltage, pulse, and slope; synchronize feed of filler with welding speed; adjust welding to vary size, location, and penetration of bead.
- Perform fifty percent (50%) of welding on aluminum tanks.
- Assist in training shop mechanic and tireman in the operation of welding and grinding equipment; cross‑train in their jobs as necessary to keep trucks and trailers in continuous operation. Keep records of parts, supplies, and chemicals used on each shift and reports to supervisor; request order of supplies, equipment, and material as needed.
- May be required to lay out, fit, and tack weld work pieces together, including heavy gauge steel.
- Watch and listen for malfunctioning equipment and machinery; report current problems or anticipated problems; repair by own discretion.
- Examine defective equipment, parts, and machinery for damage, misalignment, or excessive wear; perform routine and preventive maintenance as necessary or advises supervisor of major damage, which requires outside servicing or overhaul.
- Rebuild, replace, weld, or fabricate broken, worn, or new parts and structures as required; adjust and tests units after repair and reassembly.
- Repair and maintenance of trucks and trailers, using hand tools, power tools, gauges, test meters, hydraulic jacks or hoists, and welding and grinding equipment.
- Examine quality of welds; remove surplus slag, flux, and spatter using brush, grinder, hand scraper, power chipper, or chemical bath; apply paint or other finish as appropriate.
- One (1) year of previous welding experience or equivalent training in welding equipment and technology; or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience may be considered.
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
- Ability to meet physical requirements established by the Department of Transportation, including drug/alcohol testing.
- Ability to provide own hand tools.
- Possession of a valid driver’s license appropriate for the type of equipment to be operated.
- English language fluency, verbal and written.
- Acceptable results of a pre‑employment background check and drug/alcohol test.
