Paints Internship Overview & Description
Paint Apprentice:
The apprentice will work with the paint department in the weeks prior to rehearsal when the scenery is being constructed (in Everett, MA). Candidates will gain experience in sample making, color mixing, layout and most scenic painting techniques.
The apprentice will maintain supplies, equipment and facilities of the shop and storage areas. You might also observe or assist with materials selection, and execution technique based on the design and budget.
Job Duties- Paints scenery for productions and contracted work.
- Assists in all aspects of the execution of the scenic design in full-scale as it pertains to texture, paint and paint finish, with accurate color and style representation from the renderings, research, plans and industry standards.
- Maintains paint supplies and equipment for the paint shop, and makes shop improvements as needed, or directed by the Charge or the Assistant Charge.
- Works with Charge, Associate Charge & Lead to create samples for painting selected scenery for both Huntington productions and any project the Huntington has been contracted to execute.
- Mixes colors according to Designer’s renderings, and the designer communications.
- Follows and promotes safe working practices in the use of shop tools and equipment. Instructs all personnel in the proper use and handling of materials, including adherence to and promotion of safety regulations and use of personal protective equipment.

- Minimum of two years’ experience in painting or the equivalent.
- Knowledge of geometry and perspective for accurate layout and design.
- Knowledge of proper surface prep for all surfaces such as wood, metal, foam, plastic and fabrics.
- Basic knowledge in proper handling of solvents.
- Experience with different painting techniques and color theory in addition to carving, and faux finishing is preferred.
- Understanding basic carpentry tools, grades of paintbrushes, sprayers, and carving and sculpting tools as well as knowledge of cleaning and maintenance for these tools.
- Able to use hand/power tools properly and safely.
- Time management and interpersonal skills are essential.

- Having a working knowledge of Photoshop and Illustrator, or similar programs is strongly desirable.
- Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. and comfortable working at height.
