K-2 ASD Special Education Teacher

Devens Public Day Special Education School

DEFINITION: The Special Education Teacher is responsible for the development, implementation, and monitoring of individualized educational programming for students with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) within a therapeutic public day school setting. The teacher will provide specialized instruction aligned with each student’s Individualized Education Program (IEP), Massachusetts curriculum frameworks, and evidence-based practices designed to support academic, communication, behavioral, social-emotional, and adaptive skill development.

The teacher will create a structured, supportive, and predictable learning environment that promotes student engagement, independence, skill acquisition, and generalization across settings. The teacher will utilize research-based instructional strategies, including but not limited to Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA)-informed practices, visual supports, explicit instruction, differentiated instruction, and positive behavioral supports to meet the diverse needs of students with ASD.

The Special Education Teacher will collaborate closely with related service providers, behavior specialists, clinicians, administrators, families, and classroom paraprofessionals to ensure consistent implementation of student supports and interventions. The teacher will supervise and provide direction to paraprofessional staff regarding classroom routines, instructional supports, data collection, and implementation of individualized student goals.

PREREQUISITE TRAINING AND

EXPERIENCE:

  • Minimum:
    Bachelor’s Degree in Education/Special Education
  • Minimum: MA Licensure-PreK-8 Moderate Special Needs or Severe Special Needs
  • Minimum: SEI endorsement

PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS:

  • Master’s Degree in Education/Special Education or related field
  • 3 years experience working with students with Autism or developmental disabilities; experience in applying the principles of Applied Behavior Analysis

DUTIES:

  • Maintain a safe, structured, and therapeutic learning environment that supports student regulation and academic growth.
  • Collect, analyze, and utilize student data to inform instruction, monitor progress, and adjust interventions.
  • Daily application of the basic principles of ABA.
  • Support the development of functional academics, communication skills, executive functioning, independence, and daily living skills as appropriate.
  • Follow individual behavior support plans, collect data on behaviors, and consult regarding effectiveness of intervention.
  • Implement de‑escalation procedures and respond to challenging behaviors with respect and preserving the dignity of students.
  • Provide social modeling, scripts, and social skills instruction.
  • Support students in toilet training routines.
  • Supervise daily activities of paraprofessionals assigned to the classroom.
  • Collaborate with ancillary service providers (i.e. SLP, OT, PT, BCBA)
  • Support students in increasing communication skills including the use of visuals, AAC devices, PECS, etc.
  • Implement IEP accommodations, collect data on IEP goals, and report on progress in all areas including academics, behavior, and social skills as required by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education for students receiving Special Education services.
  • Participate in Team meetings, report out on student progress in parent friendly language, and propose new programming accommodations as needed.
  • Two‑way culturally responsive ongoing communication with parents.
  • Participation in de‑escalation and physical management training as offered by the district when appropriate.

SALARY/BENEFITS: In accordance with the Everett Public School’s Teachers Association Contract. SY 26‑27. $65,178 – $125,654.
