MIDDLE/HIGH SCHOOL SCIENCE/BIOLOGY TEACHER
-DEVENS PUBLIC DAY SPECIAL EDUCATION SCHOOL

DEFINITION:
The Middle and High School Science/Biology Teacher is responsible for providing engaging, standards-aligned science instruction to students in a substantially separate therapeutic day school setting. The teacher will design and implement individualized, differentiated instruction that supports the academic, behavioral, and social-emotional needs of students with diverse learning profiles. The successful candidate will create a structured, supportive classroom environment that promotes student engagement, independence, scientific thinking, and positive school experiences.

The Science/Biology Teacher will collaborate closely with special education teachers, clinicians, related service providers, administrators, and families to ensure instruction is responsive to student needs and aligned with Individualized Education Programs (IEPs)

REQUIREMENTS:
? Bachelor’s Degree in Science, Education, or Related Field
? Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education License Science 5-8 or related or
? Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education License Biology 8-12
? SEI Endorsement

PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS:
? Master’s Degree in Education and/or Science
? 3 or more years of middle school or high school teaching experience
? Experience working in an urban public school setting
? Experience working with students with disabilities and multilingual learners

Duties:
? Plan and facilitate lessons aligned with the Massachusetts Science Curriculum Frameworks/NGSS and district-provided curricula.
? Use all available district-provided technology curricula to create engaging science lessons that are aligned with 21st-century skills.
? Manage classroom behavior using Positive Behavior Intervention Strategies that motivate students, minimize disruptions, and foster a sense of belonging.
? Incorporate social-emotional learning standards and curriculum that promote a sense of belonging, inclusion, self-confidence, team-building, and informed decision-making.
? Utilize inclusive practices and SEI strategies for multilingual learners.
? Collaborate and co-plan with Special Education and ESL teachers to provide the highest quality instruction and support for Special Education Students and English Learners.
? Using evidence-based, culturally and linguistically sustaining instructional practices to provide equitable opportunities for grade-level learning.
? Administer assessments and utilize available data to make instructional decisions that target students' academic and linguistic needs, including MCAS and ACCESS, as well as district-wide formative and summative assessments.
? Utilize inclusive practices and SEI strategies for students on IEPs and English Learners.
? Incorporate language activities that align with the WIDA Standards into content instruction, including listening, speaking, reading, and writing, to meet the needs of multilingual learners.
? Utilize available data to make instructional decisions that target the academic and linguistics needs of students.
? Creates and maintains a safe, supportive, and inclusive environment by establishing classroom routines and systems to support student learning.
? Communicate with students’ families regularly using culturally responsive strategies that promote two-way conversations.
? Employ a strong growth mindset and participate in professional development relevant to the challenges of urban education to close opportunity gaps.
? Proctor assessments for students on exams, including formative and summative assessments, MCAS, and ACCESS.
? Collaborate with school adjustment and guidance counselors to support students' social, emotional, and mental health needs.
? Collaborate with special education leadership and teacher colleagues to review IEPs and ensure all accommodations are consistently and adequately delivered.
