Purposeof the Role
This position is intended to strengthen the connection between City Hall and the community. It places multicultural affairs and community engagement within the Mayor’s Office so that resident concerns, community partnerships, and accessibility issues can be addressed with stronger coordination, visibility, and follow-through.
Position SummaryThe Director of Multicultural Affairs and Community Engagement is a senior member of the Mayor’s Office responsible for helping residents, community partners, and City departments work together more effectively. The Director leads the City’s community engagement work, strengthens relationships with Everett’s diverse communities, and helps make City services easier to understand and access.
This role is focused on practical, resident-centered work: listening to community concerns, improving outreach, supporting multilingual communication, coordinating cultural and community initiatives, and helping city departments respond to residents with clarity, respect, and follow-through.
The position supports the City’s broader commitment to making municipal government more accessible, responsive, and connected to the people it serves.
Essential Duties And Responsibilities- Develop and carry out a citywide multicultural affairs and community engagement strategy aligned with the Mayor’s priorities.
- Serve as a key liaison between the Mayor’s Office and Everett’s neighborhoods, cultural communities, faith-based organizations, immigrant communities, advocacy groups, schools, nonprofit partners, and local stakeholders.
- Plan and coordinate community meetings, listening sessions, outreach campaigns, neighborhood conversations, and public engagement activities.
- Help residents navigate City services by improving communication, outreach, and coordination across departments.
- Work with departments to identify barriers that may prevent residents from accessing information, programs, meetings, or services.
- Support multilingual outreach and language access efforts in coordination with City departments, Human Resources, Communications, and other relevant offices.
- Coordinate cultural, educational, and community-building events that strengthen civic participation and cross-cultural understanding.
- Support constituent services by helping identify community concerns, elevating recurring issues, and coordinating follow-up with the appropriate departments.
- Build strong working relationships with community leaders and organizations to improve trust, communication, and service delivery.
- Prepare outreach materials, talking points, presentations, reports, and updates for the Mayor’s Office.
- Track engagement efforts and provide practical recommendations to improve outreach, accessibility, and resident experience.
- Represent the Mayor’s Office at community meetings, events, public forums, and regional conversations as assigned.
- Work occasional evenings and weekends to attend community events and meetings.
- Perform other related duties as required.
The Director will work closely with Human Resources and the Equity and Access Officer on issues that connect community experience with internal City systems. This may include language access, staff training, accessibility, resident-facing service standards, and efforts to make City processes clearer and easier to use.
